"Tell me about Murgatroyd," said
I Shirley suddenly, seating herself. "I
I haven't seen him"—
"He's serving his second term as

wauted to finish his work there."
Shirley tossed her head.
"Who couldn't, with all that money ?"
"He and Thome," went on Miriam,
"are rivals for the United States sen-

or two now"—
Shirley's voice grew hard.
"He told me that It cost over half a

Well, lie's got the money."
Shirley shrugged her shoulders. Ap-

stairs.

"Yes," answered Challouer enthusi-

You'll begin to think I'm suffering from

"I believe in giving praise where It

Miriam sighed with Joy. It was good

"I won't deny," presently she said,
with a smile, "that it was rather try-

Guthrie, Okla., Feb. 23.—The recall
of public officials, which haa been a
mooted question since the constitu-
tional convention, was brought up
again today by a joint resolution in-
troduced by Senator Yeager, provid-

that effect. The new proposition dif-
fers somewhat from those previously
advanced, however, in that it places
the matter in the hands of the friends
of the officials instead of allowing hit
enemies to take advantage of it.

the signers of the petition must also

Imagined, was Miriam Challoner.
"You've been away more than three
years, Shirley," sighed Miriam as she
bent over a bit of fancy work.
"It hasn't seemed so long to tue," re-
turned Shirley, "though when we iirst
went west I thought it would be
nothing short of a uightinare-walt-
iug for an old man to die."
"It must have been," assented Mir-
iam.
"No, it wasn't, because for the first
time in my,life I really came to know
my father. 1 thought 1 hud known
him long before, but 1 made a tuts

"1 always liked your father, Shirley,
and 1 think be always liked me," was
Miriam's remark.
"Yes, he did. Hut did you ever stop
to think," went on Shirley hastily—
"why. my father never wronged any-
body! My father was good- my lu-
ther was honest! Oh, 1 could scourge
myself," she declared sadly, "for the
things I used to think about father.
I even told Murgatroyd once that,
though I loved my father, 1 could
never admire him, respect him."
Miriam rose suddenly and kissed her.
All this time Shirley had been watch-
lug with growing curiosity the fancy
work ou which Miriam sewed so in-
dustriously. At last she ventured:
"Miriam, I'm a regular old maid. I
haven't been one hour lu your house
and already I'm burning up with curios-
ity to know Just whut you're making?"
Miriam Challoner hesitated for an
instant; then, holding up In the air a
tiny Infant's dress, she said softly:
"Well, If you must know, why, you
must."
Shirley exclaimed: "Isn't it dainty*

Shirley drew n long breath, saying:
"Miriam, I wish 1 were happily mar-

recollection of all but tho last few

Shirley laughed and Hushed.
