WOULD HAVE
BEEN DEAD
Says Tempie Clark, of Pope,—
Had It Not Been For Cardui,
Now in Good Health.
Pope, Tenn.—"As the result of a
fall from a horse, I suffered Intense
agony for about 4 years," writes Mrs.
Temple Clark, of this place. "I was
Irregular and had falling feelings and
other womanly trouble. At last I was
induced to take Cardui, the woman's
tonic, and it helped me a great deal.
I certainly believe if it had not been
for Cardui and Thedford's Black-
Draught, I would have been dead, in-
stead of having the blessing of health.
"I love a dollar, but I have never
seen one I think as much of as I do of
a bottle of Cardui. I could tell a great
deal more and not get tired. I recom-
mend it to all my friends, for I am
sure It will cure others as it has me."
Remember that Cardui is a vege-
table extract, composed of valuable
medicinal ingredients, which build up
vitality, tone up the nerves and
strengthen the womanly constitution.
For over 50 years, Cardui has been
in successful use. Its merit is proven
and known. Using it is no new expe-
riment. It has stood the greatest of
all tests—the test of TIME.

Mother Bird Sits on the Eggs During
the Day and the Father
at Night.
There are many little ostriches
hatched near Phoenix, Arizona, a cor-
respondent in that town writes, to St.
Nicholas. The old birds sit on eight
to ten eggs, which are very large,
weighing from three to four pounds
each, it takes about six weeks for
the eggs to hatch.
Sometimes when it rains the eggs
are taken from the nest and put in
largw incubators, as the ostrich will
not sit on a wet nest. The ostriches
are vary different from chickens. The
mother bird being gray, cannot be
seen 1.1 the day time, and the father
being black, cannot be seen very well
at nigh., so the mother sits on the
nest during the day and the father at
night, which helps to hide the nest.
The little ostriches are about the
size of a bantam hen when hatched

"THERE WERE PLENTY MORE"
How Miss Smith Was Cruel to a Little
"Blackboy" Plant Very Common
in Australia.
There is a common plant in
Australia known as the "blackboy,"
and here is a story about It.
Two young American army officers
were visiting in a small Australian
town and both happened to meet the
name young lady. They were talk
ing about her one evening and one
said to the other:
1 think Miss Smith Is a very sweet
girl."
"Oh. do you," replied his brother
"It seems to me that she is terribly
cruel. Why, what do you suppose she
told me? She said she was riding yes-
terday morning, and that she was so
much interested watching a parade
that she rode right over a little black
boy and killed it! And when I asked
her if she didn't feel dreadfully about,
it, she laughed and Bald: 'Oh, no, she
dido t think it made any difference.

Grading Literary Power,
Dean Shailer Mathews says that the
newspaper "shapes the popular mind
more by its headlines than by its ed-
itorials." By the same token, au-
thors impress by the title of their
books, not by their contents, artists by
their themes, rather than by their ex-
ecution—.and lecturers by their plati-
tudes more than by their sense.

and sre very delicate. If they get
wet they die. When first hatched they
are not fed very mucfc for a week.
Later they get all the alfalfa grass
and broken bones they want.
They grow very fast, and when six
months old they are sfr feet high,
and their pretty feathers are then cut
from their wings. They arw full grown
when one year old, but do not lay
eggs until three or four years old.
