Whitesboro, Texas, Aug. '20.--
All that is left of Abe Wildner,
the negro who murdered Mrs.
Caldwell near here last Friday, is
a little heap of ashes and a few-
charred hones which defied the ex-
terminating power of the mob-lit
flames.
Wildner was caught in the Ter-
ritory not far from the river this
morning. Fright and lack of food
had deprived him of all strength
and when three men came upon
him cowered in a field he offered
no resistance.
The men who found him started
back with him by way of Dexter.
News of bis capture seemed to be
born on the wind, for the three
men became a dozen, then a score,
then a hundred—and when they
crossed the river it was a big mad
mob.
It was the intention to bring the
prisoner to Whitesboro, but the
mob heard that a body of officers
had started to intercept them.
Knowing that a fight would be in-
evitab!e--for the mob was deter-
mined on its vengeance—it was
deemed prudent to destroy the
murderer at once slid with as little
formality as possible.
He was ti d to a tree with chains
nd wires. Faggots and dry leaves
were heaped about his body, suf-
ficient to ignite his flesh, and then
the match was applied.

Mistook Edward for a Tramp.
Appearances lire often deceitful
and even monarch* may be mistaken
for panpers, relates a London corre-
spondent. It is related that once,
not long since, when King Edward
of England, \ as Prince of Wales,
ho was staying with Leopold Roth-
schild near [.eighton Buzzard and
followed the hunt one day. About
lunch time he found himself alone
near Berkhnmsted feeling very hun-
gry and without immediate prospect
of getting any food. Recollecting,
however, that the _Smith-I)orrien's
place, Unrfont, was somewhere with-
in easy reach, lie rode over, found the
house and rang the front door bell.
A footman appeared. ''Would von
kindly tell your master that the
Prince of Wales is outside and wou'.ft
like some lunch?" he said. "Walk-
er !"' answered the man, and banged
the door in his face.

Raised from Death by Lightning.
A dispatch from Lamed, Kan.,
dated Aug. 13, says: At the town
of Hanfton, twenty miles west of
here, the five-yesr-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McPreaz
died, or seemed to die. Sunday
morning. Funeral lervices were
held yesterday. On the way to
the cemetery the metalic casket
was struck by a bolt of lightning
and split open. Thereupon, to the
amazement and consternation of
the funeral party, the child sat up
and called for her mother. The
horses were knocked down, but no
other damage was done. The little
girl ta in a fair way to recovery.
It is believed she was in a catalep
tic state, from which the shock of
lightning aroused her.

Ten Years Past the" Century Mark.
Nathan Woodward, believed to
have been more than 110 years old,
died at Basking Ridge, N. J., a few
days ago. The date of birth of an
ancient negro is always suspected,
and so it must be said that Mr.
Woodward's is fixed by his having
become free in 181G by virtue of an
act passed in 180K, freeing all per-
sons in servitude in New Jersey
when they should reach 25. There
was nothing in particular to tell
about (he old man except that he
worked for his living until ten years
ago, and since then he had beoi. sup-
ported by the town, gradually los-
ing his faculties and enjoying noili-
ing except his pipe.

Japan Likes Our Horses.
Japan as well as England has
been a large patron of the American
horse breeder, but the purchases
made here by the Japanese govern-
ment have been chiefly in the way of
fine trotting stock to improve the na-
tive breed of horses. The first ex-
periment made some years ago was
so successful that agents of Japan
are again in this country buying
finely bred animals.

Another Job for the Foolkiller.
Near Lincoln, Nebraska, the
drough has been attacked with
battery of twenty-four mortars.
At last accounts heaven's artillery
had not replied. Capt. Wright,
who commands the battery, was
bravely holding his position at last
accounts, and says he will contin-
ue the bombardment until it rains
or his ammunition gives out. He
has called on the state for a rein-
forcement of several thousand
dollars which had not been sent
forward up to the date of the latent
news. Capt. Wright is sole inven-
tor of a new vibratory theory of
rain-making, which is said to be
very successful in wet weather, but
will not stand drouth. There have
been numerous funerals in which
fools furnished the "remains," but
there seem« to be room for many
more.—Farm and Ranch.
A Negro Stock Company.
William .Jerome, the song writer,
is negolinlinp for the lease of ihe
C'omique theater, on Broadway, New
York, and if he secures it will es-
tablish there a permanent company,
composed entirely of negroes. The
best colored actors and actresses ob-
tainable will be engaged, and Je-
rome expects the enterprise to prove
a big money maker, catering wholly
to colored people.

The London Chronicle., apropos

Stories of Wonderful Cures.
They are telling wonderful stories
in Now York of remarkable cures
si'Id to have been etfected by the holy
relic of St. Anne, now on exhibition
there. One child, who has been
crippled from babyhood, was nblo
to walk the lirst time without crutch-
es, and a blind girl who had never
seen the light of day declared that
she could make out objects about her.
An aged woman, elegantly dressed,
and who came to the church in a cur
riago, was carried up tho crypt
where tho relic lies. She was
weak that she lould not stand, and
knelt on the floor. Presently she
arose and walked from the church
unassisted.
