Portland. Oct. 30.—At th« request of
the Portland Clearing House associa
tion Governor Chamberlain declared
the next five days a legal holiday in
order to prevent the money famine in
this state. The banks of this city are
absolutely sound and there has been
no run on any of them nor has one
been even threatened.
Portland banks have not only strong
accounts In the east and at San Fran
clsco. but they have during the Inst
few months loaned millions of dollars
to eastern banks. Portland banks have
been notified by correspondents In
other parts of the country and others
Indebted to them that they must not
attempt to draw on the outside for
money whatsoever
