NEW YORK. Kill. 3. Announce-
ment was made tonight that officers of
various Jewish societies in America
and Christian missionary orftaniza-
tlons have formed a committee to
appeal for funds for tho relief of the
destitute inhabitants of Palestine
Syria and adjacent regions. The com-
mittee known as the Palestine-Syria
relief committee says that an appul-
liiK measure of misery and threatened
starvation exists over a region larger
in 11 tea than Helium and among peo-
ple equal in numbers Christians Jews
und Mohammedans.
Thus far sufficient funds have been
collected for the dispatch of one ship-
load of food supplies under guarantee
of safe conduct from the belligerent
powers.

St.
Paul Mens Cluli Finds Delirious
Delight In Talks on Crime.
The grave designs of the Mrn'a club
nf St Paul's church are mixed like
the philosopher's with a little pleas-
ure. "Come" sa an Invitation to
its members "eoiin and hear another
delightful and c-ntertalnlnir talk on
viee und crime." Thus In tho cozy
parish house with "music and cigars"
there will bo diverting discussion of
our guilts and shames amusing re-
citals and analyses of tho dark deeds
of tho sedulous assassin and the pre-
dacious police; of tho little sister of
the night and her weary business; of
the dope fiend the debauchee the
on" man and the cadet.
Taking our pleasures sadly we may
mase of our moral obligation an en-
tertainment and a delight. What
more entertaining and delightful than
a talk on vice and crime by congenial
symposia with song and cigar? Let
u not proceed with sin' eradication
In the dour fashion of the Puritan
nut a the Jongleurs of St. Franclg
merry and bright.
Of course the Men' club of Ft.
Paul' does not ns indicated by Its
literature revel In a discussion of tho
Infirmities and Imperfection of
those whose succor It seek. What
is indubitably a serious and helpful
examination of prevalent evil la In-
accurately advertised in the thought
less phrase of a hurried seer y.
He meant to promise an Interesting
and instructive talk on vice and
crime. Ills hasty composition how-
ever brings -to mind the peril In
which some of heaven's lieutenants
may place themselve and their call-
Ing. Embracing their function in a
glad gusto incompatible with Its na-
ture they suggest the impression now
snd then that they enjoy it too much.

Solar Heat Is Chief Agent in
Diego Pom ess.
Sill I
Salt Is manufactured near San
Diego Cab by evaporating sea water.
During tho very hlgh'tides which oc-
cur about twice a month the water
fllows into a large storage pond and
after a short time Is pumped lino
small shallow one where It Is kepi
until partly evaporated by the sun's
heat.
It Is then let Into smaller and si ill
shallower ponds known us lnno or
pickle ponds In which It stays iiniil ii
Is) so nearly evapoiated that the re-
maining brine Is about (10 per eeiii
salt and about 40 per cent water ami
where the gypsum magnesium and
other foreign substance are depos-
ited so that when the brine Is drawn
off in tho crystallizing ponds or
"vats" as they are called it In rid of
moa of Its Impurities.
In the bottom of llii'te vats most of
the salt In the brine thou gathers in
tho shano of crystals when the water
I puinpfil out being replaced by
fresh brine. The operation Is ropi'ited
again and again un'ii lln; layer of silt
is about ten Inches thick when It is
broken up and taken to tho washer.
Here It is forced through y.ater which
I too sally to dissolve any of it but
which clean it thoroughly.
The salt Is then token up in wire
baskets sprayed with fiesh water and
passed to a conveyer by which it is
dumped on a fitack. It is still "com-
mercial" salt however and good oulv
for tanning pickling freezing ice
cream and the like. Befce It Is fit
for table use It must be dissolved in
absolutely pure water and crystalized
ngnln this second process being re-
peated over and over again until nil
of the impurities Hre removed. St.
