1UENNIAL OONFERESM T..
MINNEAPOLIS May 1. Interest
Is keen among delegates vvn assem
bled to attend the opening here toduy
of the quadrlennial general conference
of the Methodls Episcopal church as
to what action shall be taken oh tne
proposal to change the disciplinarian
rules governing amusements.
The rules prohibits dancing games
ot chance theatre-going circuses and
horse racing as being a tendency to-
ward worldllneas."
The proposition as to its retention
or rejection has been referred to a
committee.
Among the arguments advanced In
opposition to retaining the present
rule as given to the committee are:
"It violates Christian freedom.
"It Is source of constant irritation.
"it puts many In an unjust attitude
as disloyal to the church.
"It cannot be enforced.
"As an unenforced law It brings dis-
cipline Into contempt.
"It keeps many conscientious peo-
ple out of the church.
it breeds hypocrisy.
it has not added io spirituality in
the church."
Arguments for continuing the rules
are :
"The rule voices prolest Sgnlnst
m orldllneM.
"Repeal suggests a backward step
morally
"Many will avoid harmful things be-
cause the church objei ts.
cause the Church directs.
'Repeal would be interpreted with
great publicity as Indicating a moral
declension."
It was staled It would probably
be several days before the real worlf
of the conference was reached.
