Th^- night was one f terror* for L-s
bon w^ilch seemed suddenly aflame wl. i
the soethlng revolt. Bands of men wildly
througn the streets brandishing wea-
pons, while the crack of rifles was hear^
various sections oi the city. Thou-

to their homes just they did on th:
night after the assassination of King
~arlos and the Crown Prince.
The principal rioting was the result of
dispute between the republicans a.i 1
the monarchists regarding the counting
otes. Th# republicans had been feai-
_ fraud at the various Lisbon polling
places and made a determined stand fc4
their rights at St. Domlnlques chur-'i.
which was in the center of the city, a
dnstrict that is practically a stronghold
of the republicans Both of t".ie repubil-
and monarchists ketp asharp watc^h
throughout the day. As the voters we.-j
following the ancient custom of voting In
the churches they filed but slowly int
historic St. Dominiques and deposits J
•*ir ballots in the official voting box**.
When tlie polls closed the monarchist
election officers declared that it was t ;o
late to count the votes and proposed to
keep the list in the in the church and
ount them tomorrow. The republican
tellers refused to aasent to this, insisting
upon an immediate count, following b
ie sealing of the boxes.
The difference t'.ie officials spread' to
the crowd and in a moment blows we.
struck and a general flght followed. Sud-
denly the municipal guard arrived and
cleared the edifice of the struggling com
batants at the point of the bayonet. In
the meantime the crowd outside tliu
church had been greatly augmented and
the guardsmen appearance at the uoj'i
after they had forced the people into i'ie
streets was the signal for a shower ot
stones, under which they were forced to
retreat to the Interior of the buildh-g.
As they retired they fired a volley fr> i
their rifles, bringing down several of tin
rioters The mob steadily Increased and
shouts and cries of nager were heard on
every side. The rioters armed them-
selves anew and soon the edifice was lit-
erally surrounded by a maddened mob.
The guardsmen fired Into their midst
through the doorways but the voile. s
were feeble and Ineffectual. Eventua.lv
the commanding officer placed a detail
on the bah ony over the m*ln portal fro .i
which point of vantage the guardsmen
firfd repeatedly Into the surgins populace
wounding i large number. Still the mo^
did not give way but only attacked the
churC.i in an attempt to reach the guar.lj
•e furiously. Several of the guards-
men were injured but they were replaced
p balcony by others and for th.ee
hours the flght continued. The^ thr-v^

cAvalry with one battery appeared driv-

this time night had fallen and ther?
ensued In fie darkness a desperate ail
uncertain hand to hand encounter i> -
tween the soldiers and rioters. The^lat-
now numbered thousand
inched paving stones from the stre?^*
an J rushed into nearby houses
they snatched all sorts of missiles which
they hurled at the troops.
Just as t'.ie soldiers reached the squar
fronting tie church the guard on the
balc>ny fired a volley directly into th
ranks of the Infantrymen and three o
the latter fell mortally wounded. In ihv
confusion and darknees the guardsmen
had mistaken them for a band of rix
era.
Before the superior forces of cavalr
the mob slowly fell back. Eventually th'
mobs in the streets were disperse*! b i

place of shelter.
Six persons were found to 'nave be;-
slain and the wounded were strewn evoij
where. The soldiers picked up some o-
the latter and removed theb to hospital
Among them were several children \v.
had been trampled under the hoofs t
the horses.
Another seiioiw collision occurred i
Alcaiitar as the result of a repubiicau
oter challenging a monarchist. Th<
crowd ruShed for the bollot box and
fierce stiuggle ensued both Inside ar. 1
outside the church. Gusrdsmen wer® c

clubbed rifles, but outside they wer
greeted with yells of derWon and a
avalanche of tsones.
The guardsmen thereupon opened fin
killing one person and wounding ma ;
more. Smaller manifestations oocu vc
in other sections of the city.
Lisbon remains practically an arme*4.
camp, l^arge numbers have been arrest
ed. The people are n^w in a state o
feevrls'.i anrest and it is feared iha
there may be a recurrence of the blood
shed.
The general opinion here is that the
government showed a lack of wisdom 11
its drastic action last night. It is thought
that more leniency should have oe...i
displayed especially In view of the Taj
that the monarchial groups rallied strong
iy in support of the government. It
fearM fnat the proceedings following th
eelotion will only serve to irritate • h
public.
When Queen Amelia was informed o!
the riot she clasped King Manuel to he.
heart and burst Into tears The king *.im-
pressed the desire that the greatest t «•
caution should be take nto prevent fur-
ther bloodshed.
