Companag the "1«UJ Lpum of ISW with thoae of 1900 it ia
fovnd that the total nuaibtr of nacafaetaring plant* in the i-wintrr in-
crtaitd from ir i .'1 > 12 to IMJ39, or mm than doable. In that time the
total prodoct of the planta ineneaed in greattr ratio, going up from
9tjMtJ19,l9l in a year to 913,914487.498. Ia 1880 the annual arer*
ag* wagea paid to «aeh iadindoal emptottd in the manufacturing planta
til $473. For parpoaea of illnatretion iheae ihtat Sgarea art taken
from the craaut ivoort of 1900, and are obtained \jj dividing the total
parment in wia in each Ytar, which, tu $2,238,691,154 in 1900 with
the number of wage earner* in that year, which, ia 1900 waa 5,316,802.
80 much far the wage inrrematt.
At reapocta prictt the United State* treaaarr reports show the aret.
age whok-aale pnoa of group* of commoditita on Januarr 1, in each
tear, the gmopt being clatf.^wl aa fallow*: Breadstuff*, meat*, dairj
and ftrden ttuffe, cl'ithing, metal* and m.tcellanama article*. In 1880,
what the total of all tbew group* of articlai would ocxt, or what repre-
sent* the arerage wholesale price* of the wtiol* country would be, ia rep-
resented by the itun of tlZ2-67. In 1*«90 the *um of $90.19 i* required to
porebate then* articlea; on January 1, 1903, the ram of $100.35 ia re-
quired. There ha* been an increaae of price* daring the put few year*,
hut a dee ded fall in price* tinoe 1S80. New, in t ew of the claim that
the farmer would be the greater tufferer, tie change* in the relative prices
of bread*tuff< may be uted for illustration: In 1880 the arerage price
on the group* of bread*tu(f* was $22.99; in 1896, the lowest mark in
renent yean, the arerage price* of the group* of breadetuff* showed a*
low aa $11.38, while on January 1, 1943, the range of the same group of
artk!<-s thowtd at $17.10. So mwh for agricultural prices, a fall from
92! to $17. Taking metals, a* a fair illustration of manufactured com.
modifies and the group shows $25 in 1880, down to $12,83 in 1896, and
np to $17.13 on January 1, 1903. Thus the fall in metal* ws* from $25
in 1880 to $17 in 1903. Now look at all the group* aa showing the arer-
age price* on January 1, each of the year* 1890 and 1903, for the purpose
of Doting where the change in prices ha* been the more noted: Bread-
rtjff* in 1890 were listed at $12.76, and in 1903 they had increued to
$17.10; meat* in 1890, $7.62, and in 1900, $9.52; dairy and garden
product* for the different years ron- from $1$ to $14, all other foods Ml
in prices from 99.93 to $9.41; clothing rose from $14.04 to $15.93;
metal* from $16.24 to $17.85, and all other articlea collected under the
general head of m.MX-llaneoua rose from $15.11 to $16.57. Thus it will
be seen that the highest increase in price* were on breadstuff*, meat*
and dairy product*, and the amalleat proportionate increase waa on
clothing and metal*, manufactured product*.
The figure* shown by these census report* mem to indicate rerjr
«orici*ely that the general tendency of the conaolidation of capital in
large manufactsring plants ha* ><een to increa** the relative proportion
of product above the increase in the total number of hand* employed
and the total inrr>aae in the number of plant*. But the cen*u* return*
*bow that there ha* been a substantial increase in the total average wageo
paid to each indirua) in the various great industries of the osuntry. In
the iron and *t>*I industry the rate moved up from $393 in 1880 to $531
in 1890. Similar increases in greater or lew proportion, are ahovn in
other industries, although in many instance* the arerage rate is not ao
high in 1900 a* in 1890, doe, doubtless, to the failure of the wage
earner* to recorer from the vriou* fall in the arerage wage* during
the industrial depression of 1893-96.
It would teem, judging from the*e official figures, that the repub-
lican party should hare no difficulty in demonstrating, in the coming
campaign that, whether the oountry ha* obtained all the prosperity pot-
able under the policies of protection and the gold standard, there cer-
tainly has been decided prosperity as ia indicated by the increases in
wealth production and wage* paid, and at the same time an liicreaae
in price*, notably of farm products, which the democratic leader* from
Bryan down, a**erted in the campaign* of 1896 wa* a re*ult impossible
of atttainment nnd'.r the policies of the republican party.
