Joe Runnels,
arraigned In t<

derlng Assistant
fx-police officer, wan
h probate court yea-
rn the « hares of mur-
Ity Marshal J. N.
Salisbury on the night of June 30. Run
nels appeared In the court with
Sheriff Frank Rinehart. He was in his
shirt Hit-eves, was very quint and un-
attentlve to surroundings and teamed
to be none the worse for his week's
incarceration. He still n-fuaes to talk
to anyone In r. gar.l to the shooting
When County Attorney Edgar
Jones read the charge of murder Run-
nels was looking straight ahead and
seamed not to hear the words us they
were spoken. His attorney, Ool. Tom
Jones, In behalf of "the prlaoner waiv-
ed an examination and Judge Poster
bound him over to the grand Jury
without lm.il. He was at onoe taken
bark to the county Jail by the sheriff
A large crowd bad gathered in the
court roi.m to hear the evidence, and
the waiving of examination, while no
surprise, was a disappointment to
those who desired to s *e and hear.
A great many > f the crowd left the
room with the sheriff and prisoner and
followed them to the Jail.
There have been on new develop-
ments In the case or no further ar-
rests, as rumor has Insisted -there
would be. The attempts to locate Joe
Bradford have so far proven fruitless.
A committee of citizens waited on
Judge J. H. Burford several days ago
and asked that a special grand Jury
b-- summoned and Runnels be given
an Immediate hearing. As this, how-
ever, together with the p«wsibillty of
a change of venue would cost the
county $1,000 or more, the matter was
dropped.
It is known that on the evening of
the shooting Runnels also made
threats and later an assault on Alder-
man T B. Reder. whom he accused of
being instrumental In having him re-
lieved from the force. The evidence, It
1h said, will bring out the fact that
Runnels had made threats to shoo*
City Marshal Renyolds as well as
Salisbury.

know him. He seems to be a quiet,
unobtrusive manner, foreign to seeking
trouble.
About four o'clock on Sunday evening
according to Stewart, his fourteen year
old daughter, Nannie, left home under
mysterious circumsthances and for some-
time could not be located. About sun-
down, however, It was ascertained that
she was In tho home of the Bride's. Mrs.
St<wart went to the latter place alone,
as her husband had gone on a hunting
trip after dinner, but Mrs. Bride refused
to tell whether or not the girl was In
the house and declined to allow the
mother to see her. One word led. to an-
other and a quarrel ensued between the
two women, which ended In Mrs. Bride's
securing n musket, leveling it at Mrs.
Stewart and threatening to shoot. At
this point In the game Stewart, return-
ing from his hunting trip stopped at tho
Bride s home and took In the situation.
He placed his gun by the side of the
house and succeeding in taking the mus-
ket away from the woman, put it beside
his own weapon.
Another parleying of an hour occurred
and still Mrs. Bride refused to allow the
parents to their daughter. In tho
meantime, however. Stewart had seen the
girl and was certain of her being con-
cealed in the house. Chas. Bride, a young
man of twenty-one years, came home,
noted very overbearingly In the matter
and ord end the parents off the place.
Stewart claims that young Bride had
repeatedly Insulted his daughters at
j achcool until he Was forced to keep them
at home He clalme also that he has
educated his daughters and tried to give
them every advantage, although being
somewhat strict with them in regard to
social matters He believes the Brides
