The American people, above
all others, have goor! reason to
love their country. In all the
things that are good it is far su-

the globe.

The daily newspapers carry
the stories of privation and suf-

It is remarkable, however, that

the governor is right. There are

It is stated that there are 12,-

and only three per cent are
specially trained. There are also
12,000,000 or so of cooks, and
not one is sufficiently broken to
stand hitched.
The best way in the world to
keep prospective home-seekers
from coming to Cherokee county
and making their homes among
us is for our county commission-
ers to squander five thousand or
more dollars in paying political
obligations.

A woman's idea of keeping her
blame and ions, except those at home, have
! no attractions for Americans.
We do not wish to annex any
other part of the world, and we
know that we have enough to do
to govern our own land.
This lack of ambition on the
part of the United States will
keep us free from entanglements
with other countries. And the
very fact that we are unprepar-
ed for war may be the balance
wheel that will keep our ship of
state right side up and free from
conflict.
To love our country best is to
love it even better in peace than
in war. No true American wants
war. Not that every American
with a true heart would not re-
spond to a call to arms to protect
the honor and integrity of his
country, but Americans know
they serve their country best
when they encourage and work
for peace.
The Young Women's Christian
Association of the University of
Oklahoma has sent twelve bar-
rels of clothing to the suffering
Belgian refugees in England.
This collection of clothing repre-
sents several weeks work by the
young women. The University
organization is now making
preparations to aid the poor of
Oklahoma towns.

GOOD FOR ITALY.
We have been inclined to look
upon Italy as a nation of organ
grinders and mmkey trainers.
But the other day when the
country was in the throes of an
earthquake without parallel in
histor , when the dead lay in
the streets by the thousand, the
Italian people sent this message
to the nations of the earth. '"In
our distress we are proud of the
fact that we do not need outside
assistance. Send your contribu-
tions to the nations atwar.*'
How fine that is! How it
strengthens our faith in the ulti-
mate honesty of mankind, in
that spirit of brotherly love
which will some of these days
make war almost impossible!
Send your contributions to the
nations at war. Can you beat
that? We must revise our esti-
mate of It ly after this.

grain, livestock and
general farming their main in-
dustries is far to the front this
season.
For many causes general bus-
iness conditions in our country
are just now in a period of de-
pression. But it can safely be
said that the trend of business
is toward improvement, and we
can look for better things during
the coming year. Tahlequah is
in the center of an area known
as "The Heart of the West" —
eastern Oklahoma.
POT AWAY THE GUNMAN.
Another bank robbery, the last
of a score or more in the state
within the past three months,
occurred last week near Tulsa,
in the oil field country, and this
time an officer of the law was
killed in the attempt to prevent
the escape of the fugitive
robbers.
If the state of Oklahoma is
ever going to get away from the
reputation of being a wild west-
ern scate, uncivilized and inhab-
ited by criminals, it is time
something definite and effective
is done to put a stop to these
kind or depredations.
The present legislature should
take energetic steps to enact a
law that will strike terror into
the hearts of the bank breakers.
But bank robberies will not
cease, no matter how great the
threatened punishment, so long
as the people in general encour-
age the "profession" by placing
thern upon pedestals after they
have "reformed" by permitting
them to deliver public lectures
on the craft and by paying to
see their past performances in
motion picture shows. The ris-
ing generation of bandits should
be made to realize, right now,
that the day of the gun man has
passed and that they will be
much more appreciated if they
contribute to bank deposits rath-
er than take the deposits of
others.
A man who will live and work
in a town and knock on that
town is "a son-of-a-gun, the
scrapings of creation and is not
a gentleman," according to the
standard of citizenship set up by
the Cassville Democrat, which
adds: "From reports we have
had some of these things in
Cassville. Their presence will
never be missed from this com-
munity. Get out. We don't
want or need you."
