trial of Harry Hayward, charged with
the murder of Miss Catherine Ging, a
dressmaker, on December ttd last, end-
ed this afternoon when the jury re-
turned a verdict against Hayward of
murder iu the tirst degree.
Hayward placed a bet < f $lo this
morning that the verdict would be ac-
quittal ami that U would be reached
inside of two hours.
Shortly after 'i. o'clock the jury sent
word to the judjre that it was ready to
render its verdict. Hayward was
brought Into court, while a great
crowd gathered in and about the build-
ing. As soon lis order was secured the
jury rendered the verdict of guilty of
murder iu the tirst degree.

ing of the state fair managers yester-
day it was decided to offer 810,000 in
purses for the trotting meeting duriug
the state fair in the fall. Special purses
will be decided on later. Col. Griffin,
of California, gave bond yesterday to
the directors of the Union I'ark Track
association to secure payment of all
prizes offered, and will arrange a trot-
ting meet for June.
