national convention held in the city
Chicago. This editorial in the
Transcript was the llrst mention in
this county, so far as 1 know, of the
dreaded negro question, unfortunately
injected into this campaign by a politi-
cal party whose sole hope of perpetu-
ation in power lies in their ability to
control the negro vote, whose past
elevations to rule, in so many instances,
have been obtained through colored
ballots.
i had read the editorial and fully
recognized the evidences of bitter sec-
tional hate therein, and knew fau
well the Topic would properly defend
the democratic side of the question,
and would lully present those views
entertained by a vast majority of the
more elevated and sensible and refined
men of both the democratic and re-
publican parties. However, it seemed

thereunder a star, which was not dis-
covered by tiie Topic cuiior till the
lull issue of tiie paper had come irom
the press. Now this luminary star
on earth is made the object ol a
very serious attack by the Transcript
editor, i don't know why. The pun
may know. 1 hope they do. i
think, however, we may all reasonably
inter that this assault on a spot on
paper was an intended or attempted
reply to the subject matter of the
article at the end of which this star
appeared.
The truth of the matter Is this poor
star got an unmerciful editorial
thrashing, an a-la-John-D.-tiullivan
knockout, i believe every man ought
to know the fruits of his own light,
if he has whipped something big,
mighty, great or immense, then the al-
loted praise to the victor is due him.
if he has whipped something very
much inferior to himself, then he can
have something to think about. 1
think it but just that 1 put Mr. burke
to thinking, lie really does not seem
to know how to think about this
Nigger" question.
The star having been left at the end
ot the article, and having incurred
the displeasure of the Transcript as it
did left the article in the Topic in
a light to be regarded with a degr
of suspicion by some who may be of a
suspicious nature. 1 am unwilling that
any taint of suspicion shall attach
thereto in any form whatever. 1 pre-
pared this copy under the full realiza-
tion of the fact that the political party
to which a man may belong plays no
part as to whether he be a good man
or a bad man; whether he be sincere
or insincere. There are good men in
all parties—and there are bad ones too.
I did not write with enmity towards
any man or any party.
If 1 made mistakes, errors, or blun
ders in this article I yet have sufft
dent courage to acknowledge them, if
1 made statements therein which are
not true, I surely
but facts are the best teachers
anu they are What the people want.
Now l do not know what may be your
"bore, (a term ol measurement you
use.) How does tiiat interest either
myself or tne public: The number ot
your bore may be far in excess ot the
number you credit to me U-). The

would that aitect the people who want

the measurement ot republican car-
bines is as lorelgn to my business as

as an argument. This is only referred
to lor the purpose ol snowing you just
how silly it may appear to you now
and just what an inttniteslmaliy small
place such things can have in matters
pertaining to a controversy.
Ill truth and in lact my answer was
made to your Nigger plank editorial
with no hope or expectation that you
would ever attempt an answer. The
plain truth Is, it was written to hush
you up on this question about which
you seem to possess a superabund-
ance ol prejudice and but little com-
mon knowledge it had the desueu
effect, so far as joining the issue is
concerned. You dodge all the ques-
tions submitted to you by saying that
1 am dangling "negro equality belore
your eyes, and that the republican
plank "does not in the least touch
upon this question. iilght here is
where you are deluded. You claim that
"such a thing as social equality be-
tween the races la, of course, not pos-
sible, save In the minds of the most
Ignorant, or demagogues like this star
actor." Will you not just answer one
question and state why In some states
in which the republican party Is In
control, they permit, by law, the iiv
terinarrlage of niggers and whites!
Del it ever be said to the credit of
the ssouthern people, whom it appears
you would oppress, that they have
no state disgraced by such a law. Did
you ever look It up to see just how
many of these states controlled by
the republican party have mixed
schools? In these schools the white
children and colored children are
placed on the same social level. Many

in order that my primary suit
should have its full and complete orna-

may understand it.

In the second place it is as bald of

I offered to criticise Mr. Koosevelt for
dining a nigger at the White House
table and 1 did not do so without rea-
My authority for mak-
ing such criticism was that such course
was demoralizing in its tendency, and
a dangerous example to the "nigger.
If this act ol the president is nut i
bit of social equality 1 have lost my
faculties. That social equality is de-
moralizing, we must ail admit. The
universally accepted fact is that the
negro stands on a plane ol civilization
far below that on which the white
man stands. Social equality has no
meaning it' it does not mean lor the
two races to meet at the equilibrium
point between the two planes This
would mean a downward step for the
white race, a race which has it*' fa< e
towards Goil Almighty and tin* stars.
Downward, never, upward and onward,
always. That this act ot our ■ hief
magistrate was. and is. a dangerous
cample to the negro is only t' o evi-
dent. Within sixty days from the date
of this Booker Washington incident
hundreds of gatherings of negroes In
Washington City, Richmond, Boston,
n, .. york and other < Itlea had bean
held to make open declaration of their
social rights and In some cases the
most Inflammatory speeches were
made, threatening to establish their
social rights at the expense of such
mediums as fire and dynamite. A
young "nigger" clerk In the Treasury
Department, a building almost in the
shadow of the White House, taking
fresh courage at this incident of th«*
president, sends his note, ' calling card"
to a young white woman clerk, work
ing . lose by his desk in the same de-
partment. asking permission
