amid In the opinion of the (ireclc
traveler the work of ir.alcing the road
«, as great as that *f building thfl
pyramid, for it took ten years to con-
-t'rui t and it was composed of pol- I
j shed stones v. ;th ligures carved on
th. m. But that does not ivmsare in
magnitude with the highways con-
(tructwl by the Peruvians, while
in 'di. \al K.uroi>e was stiii in a rtAte
of semi-barbarous disorganization.
The two principal roads in Peru ran
from yuito in the north to I'tizco, the
rapital. the one along the sandy
and level strip of coast. the
ulher along the plateau of the Andes, a
1 region of unparalleled engineering
l difficulty. The length of the second
has been estimated at from l.iiXl to
•J.OCK) miles. It crossed sierras buried
in snow, bridged ravines with walls
nt solid masonry, mounted and de-
scended precipice* by taircases hewn
in the solid rock and ran in intermin-
able galleries along the sides of in-
tractable mountains. Where rivers
had to be crossed bridges were mado
with ropes of stout, pliant osier
twisted to the thickness of a man's
body and stretched over the stream
sometimes for a distance of 20U feet
' These cables swung side by side, and,
fastened with planks so as to form a
footway, were drawn through holes in
enormous buttresses of stone specially
constructed on each bank, and were
secured firmly at each end to heavy
beams of timlier. A railing of similar
osier material gave the ptssenger con-
fidence as he passed t..e oscillating
bridge that sank dangerously in the
middle, and mounted rapidly at the
sides. The great highway was twen-
ty feet wide, and was built with
Rags of freestone covered with bitumi-
nous cement. It was measured out
by posts *et up at every league: cara-
vanscries and magazines were sta-
tioned at convenient distances for the
Peruvian soldiers on their military
expeditions: and a regular postal ser-
vice had been organized by which
highly trained runners, relieved every
five miles, could convey messages a
1 distance of 200 miles in the twenty-
I four hours. The roads were kept in
beautiful order, the inhabitants of a
| district being responsible for that
portion of the highway which trav-
j ersed their land. At the same time
| it should be remembered that there
i was no wheel traffic to cut up the
1 level surface of the hard pavement
There is considerable irony In the
fact that it was not till the Spaniards
forcibly introduced their so-called civ-
ilization into Peru that tho famous
ruads began to fall into disrepair.

Mr. Lease ought to deny over his
own signature the charge that he
started Col. Mary's boom for mayor
of Wichita. He can not afford to
rest under the imputation that he is
trying to keep her at home.
The morning dish rag speaks of a
"citizens ticket" and asks the people
to support it. What is this "citizens j
ticket," you talk about, Brother;
Fitts. Blame your cowardly old hide,
why don't you hoist that ticket at the
top of the editorial page of your mug-
wump sheet and tell Hoke Smith and
his seven dollar per diam townsite tit j
to go to shoel. You have the dispos-

Wooden >ourUlim«ut.
A German j ericKlicftl devoted to
wood industrios announces that food
products consisting partly of wood
are now manufactured. At Berlin a
factory has been built which is turn-
ing out about 200 quintals of wooden
bread a day. Sawdust is subjected to
a chemical treatment, after which it
is mixed with one-third farina and
prepared like ordinary bread. The
product at present serves only as food
for horses, but the Berlin tramway
company, which is the most import-
ant customer of the factory, is well
pleased with the results. The manu-
facturers say that wooden bread con*
i stitutes an excellent food for man.
