The national conference sounded
the death knell of fusion, as far as
concerns the Peoples party.
Logan county was taken as the
base for equalization by territorial
board of equalization: but it is not
generally known that the assess-
ment of Logan county was raised 35
per cent before it was taken as the
basis.
So vigorous is the foreign policy
of Mckinley that he is likely to take
Hawaii without waiting for the con-
sent of any other nation on earth
"squeaks" the Republican pre.-s;
but when the question of the remon-
etization of silver is discussed their
bravado is conspicuously absent and
they coo and sing low about the
consent of foreign powers.
Several counties in the territory
have registered a strong and healthy
kick at the action of the territorial
board of equalization in raising val-
uation of the several counties, care-
fully excepting railroad and tele-
graph property, which had been
lowered by assessment board from
last year's valuation, from the
raise. We think that if board had
excepted anything from the raise
the cash on hand returned by the
assessors should have been the itec
excepted.
A few Populists in this ttrritorv
believe that the tactics used by Jo-
nah in capturing the whale could be
used very successfully :n this terri-
tory by the Pcpu'.ists in capturing
the Democratic party. Jonah land-
ed inside the whale, but in three
days the whale spewed him up as
refuse matter anc the Democratic
party will carry arc-nd in its inter-
na'. anatomy a pop that captures ::
(a la Jonah about the same period
and will loathe him ever afterwards
for being so nauseating.
The work of the national confer-
ence of the Peoples party which me:
in Nachille ;ast week is now a mat-
ter of history. Prior to the meet-
some doubted the wisdom of rack a
conference and were in a meas.re
fearful of results; but in riew of the
work accomplished there is not a
true Populist m the co-ntry but re-
joices that the conference met. In
! the future the Peopies party can re
1 ly on the rank and file of its mem
bers doing the right thing at the
1 proper time.
^ m
Hon. Thomas E. Watson did not
attend the national conference—an-
other display of Tom's excellent
judgment. He doubtless realized
that his presence at conference
would be used by opposition to det-
riment of conference. Mr. Watson
i is a man who does not seek vindica-
tion or self-aggrandizement. He
expresses himself freely, but dees
not urge his views on others. Like
Lincoln he believes that it is al-
ways safe to rely on the calm judg
ment of the people, and in it he
puts his trust. Thos. E. Watson to
day holds one of the chief places in
the affections of the people battling
for a better civilization in this
country.
TERRITORIAL COMMITTEE
MEETING.
Pursuant to call of Secretary
Sanders the Populist territorial com-
mittee met at El Reno last Tuesday
for the purpose of selecting a terri-
torial chairman to fill vacancy
caused by resignation of Leo Vin-
cent. Seventeen counties were rep-
resented by delegates in attend-
ance. Counties not represented—
Pottawatomie, Beaver, Woodward
and Washita. Editor French, of
Chandler, was chosen chairman of
the meeting, and Leroy Walker of
Stillwater, secretary. Some unfin
ished business of committee was
completed and a recess was taken
for dinner. After dinner a free ex-
pression of opinion by each member
of committee was called for, and
most of the members of the com-
mittee made short talks giving brief
outline of views as to future action
of party in this territory. A few of
the committee were inclined to look
rather favorably towards future fu-
sion with Democratic party in this
territory though they expressed
themselves not being wholly satis
tied with the results of late fusion
and at present time were undecided
as to what course would be best to
pursue. A large majority of com-
mittee did not favor a fusion policy
and some few were utterly opposed
to it. When the time arrived for the
selection of a chairman the names
I of T. F. Smith of Newkirk, and L.
F. Laverty of Guthrie, were placed
in nomination; but Mr. Smith re-
quested that his name be withdrawn
as he was not a candidate and was
unwilling to assume the duties of
the position. Mr. Laverty received
the unanimous vote of the commit-
tee and in a neat speech thanked
committeemen for confidence re
posed in him and assured them that
in accepting trust that he was not
unmindful of the onerous duties it
imposed: but that he would put
forth his best efforts to advance the
cause of the Peoples party in this
territory and he requested in return
that he be assisted and encouraged
by the advice and loyalty of the
press and members of party in the
territory.
Mr. Laverty is a man of wide ex-
perience in political affairs, conser-
vative and discreet in his express-;
ions, and a loyal Populist and good
organizer and so situated that he
can devote the time necessary to
look after the duties of the chair-
manship without seriously interfer-
ing wiih his other business. We be-
lieve that Mr. Laverty will make us
one of the best chairmen the party
has ever had in the territory, and
this is saving a good deal, for Mr.,

Camp Meeting.
The dry hot weather is proving al-
most too much for city supply of wat-
er. The amount of water furnished
by well shows no decrease; but the
amount of water used has greatly in-
creased and the council has given
strict instructions to water commis-
sioners to see that the users of water
comply strictly with city ordinances.
The result is that several parties hav e
been caught violating ordinance and
