and he went to Guthrie Tuesday
and tiled on the claim.

The track on the new railroad
had been laid to within three

Messrs. Portis and Peoples, of
Shawnee, purchased two acres
oil the Hunter claim, between
lltli and 12th streets, and wiil at
once erect neat residences there
on. • These gentlemen are cotton
dealers and come to Chandler be-
cause they realize that this is to
be the great cotton market"oi the
territory.
Wm. Biles, of Kickapoo town-
ship, visited the News office yes-
terday in company with Capt.
Stubbletield. Both men are old
soldiers, and both had their left
ears clipped by .bullets during
the war. Mr. Biles was a •con-
federate soldier, but is the
atauncbest kind of a reyuljli'-an
and preTi'Hs republican success
in this county this fall.

A man named Jack Monroe,
who has been traveling about
the country under varrious as-
sumed names for some time,
was arrested last Sunday by
Marshal Randolph and Dr. Gal-
yen on information received from
James Bennings, who was play-
ing the detective. It seems that
both Monroe and Bennings had
been sentenced to the Kansas
state reformatory at Hutchinson,
but that the former had escaped |
and Bennings, learning that
Monroe was down here, conclud-
ed to get the credit for captur-
ing him. Bennings was not en-
trusted with any papers, how-
ever, and so had-to return with-
out his man, the sheriff holding
Monroe till the proper officei?ar-
rived.
flcMASTER SLKiHTLY OFF.
Frank McMaster misquotes
the News when lie makes us say
that -'there is little good land in
the Kiowa and •Comanche coun-
try." What we did say was that
the bottom lands along the
streams were very tine, but that
when the country was allotted
the Indians would take this land
and much more, and that the oth-
er land was tit only for grazing
purposes. We also said that the
rainfall was uncertain and that
hot winds made farming a very
precarious calling in that section.
We have no desire to misrepre-
sent that country, and the views
which we expressed and which
we re-affirm may be confirmed
by a visit to that country, and by
talking to those who have lived
there fifteen • or twenty years.
It would be a great mistake to
assert that the reservation is val-
ueless, but it is a greater error
to trj to make people believe
that general fanning can be
made to pay in the arid region of
our territory. There are occas-
ionally seasons when good crops
! are raised on the best land, but
I the average land can not lie de-
pended upon, and when Mr. Mc-
: Master asserts that "there is no
■ other equal area in Oklahoma su-
perior to it," he is talking very
! wildly, as anyone can see. One
acre in eastern Oklahoma is
worth five or ten out there for
farming purposes.
