SHAWNEE WILL GO TO
CONVENTION TO LAND
OZARK TRAIL ROUTE
NORMAN WILL HAVE HELP IN
SWINGING VOTE TO FAVOR
ROUTE THROUGH HERE.
The following story, taken front
Sunday's Shawnee W wn, indicates
that our neighbors to the east are
ffoUtg to the Ozark rrail epi th k
loaded for bear and eager to land the
new route. A good live delegation
can be former between Nortnan
Shawnee and other cities on the pro-
posed route, and it should then be
easy to swing the convention to our
way.
"Shawnee has a chance to get on
the Ozark trail after waiting thrvi
years lor such an improvement.
"The following clippings from the
Daily Oklahoiuan shows that th dc
mi'c for the road here is not one of
idle wanton:
"R. A. Singlctary 'nanager of
the good roads association, will
represent Oklahoma City at the
annual convention < f the Oza k
Trails association to be held Oct-
ober 7, S. and 9 in Pittsburg,
Kansas. Various civic organiza-
tions in the eit.v have been
urged by II. \V. Ilarvey, of
Monte Ne. Ark., president of the
association, to appoint delegates
to the convention but have failed
to do -so, Singlctary said.
"A letter front Harvey point
out; the advantages from an ad-
vertisement standpoint which
conies t«> Oklahoma City because
of the Ozark Trail and suggests
that the city would reap nujny
benefits from a greater represen-
tation at the convention.
"Ilarvey also pointed nut that
a change in the routing o* the
highway because of Oklahoma
City's attitude in regard to the
Newcastle bridge may result.
The proposed chance would put
the road through Shawnee.
"Eight states will be repre-
sented at the convention. Repre-
sentatives of the government
good roads department wi!l be
among the speakers at the conven-
tion it was announced.
Sittle Going to Meeting.
uEd Sittle of the 13 road way garage
is going to the meeting and asks that
the civic bodies oi Shawnee aid him
in drawing the road through Shaw-
nee. It is estimated that fully one
hundred cars carrying at least 400
people, pass along the Ozark Trail
each day and that their custom in
Shawnee would be worth the while of
the organizations in backing the
movement.
The proposed road would follow
its regular ..course to Stroud or
( handler, and then branch and conic
to Shawnee, crossing the river at
Xormau and follow in . on to Chicka-
sha, there joining the route as n<>\v
marked. It would cut oft consider-
able mileage and draw all the motor-
ist- through Shawnee.
In addition to the cut off. the
crossing of the river i- an important
facto , the motorists now paying
I $1.50 to cross u( Newcastle on the
terry < r $1.00 to cross a low water
: bridge.
Associations Should Act.
i All good roads committees and
I highway departments in the city
should act at once to endeavor t"
* land the road for Shawnee. In dol-
lars and cents alone, the road is
i worth many times w hat it will cost
to the city and in addition, the beau-
ties of Shawnee will become known
j to many people by the constant
' movement of motorists down its
. streit-.
| The Broadway garage has started
a movement for the landing of trails
I here and the civic organizations
I should endeavor to aid them in the
landing of the trails here.
