Bryan Swats
Southern Senator*
WASHINGTON Feb. 4— Wil-
liam Jer.ings Bryan paused in the
lobby of the Senate lor.,: enough
today to administer a sound re-
buke to the Democrats of the
South for holding up am osbtruct-
ing the passage of the national
woman suffrage amendment.
"I hope." he said, "that the
Democrats of the south will not
handicap the Democrats of the
North by compelling them to
spend the next twenty-five years
explaining to the women of the
country why the Democratic par-
ty prevented submission of the
amendment-"
The senate votes on the suffrage
amendment next Monday, accord-
ing to announcement made last
night There is little chance at
the present time for adoption of
the resolution, but its adoption is
virtually assured howe ■ s# with
the meeting of the next Congress,
which will be controlled by the
Republicans.
Upon petition of twenty-two
Democratic senators favoring the
woman suffrage resolution pend-
rg in the Senate. Senator Martin
of Virginia, the Democratic leader,
today called a conference of Demo-
cratic members of the Senate for
tomorrow night to consider the
question.
