A. M. Augustine read a paper In
which be r»ld in part: it was my for-
tune and pleasure to spend some time
last summer visiting the commercial
peach orchards of Oeorgta during their
busiest shipping season. I shall speak
principally of Mr. Hale’s orchard in
Georgia, for it la conducted on thor-
ough business and horticultural meth-
ods. I arrived lu Ft. Valley the morn-
ing of the 18th of July, and I can never
forget the beautiful appearance of the
great Elberta peach orchard* extend-
ing along mile* of drive, with the trees
on either band bending to the ground
with the moat beautiful fruit grown.
In point of value and productiveness
the Elberta la to Georgia what the
Ben Davis is to the western apple
growera, except that It stands much
higher on the list In quality.
First we will visit the pickers In the
field. To handle the crop of thesp
70.000 Elberta trees require* nbout lt)0
pickers. These are composed princi-
pally of negroes and are divided Into
four gangs. I wish to say right here
that the South certainly has the nil
vantage of the North In fruit growing
in (Mg one respect a: least, to say
itontiag of the cheap lands. There Is
no better laborer under the sun than
the Southern negro U he is handled
properly. When properly trained t.e

Tli* Ap|)ln Sc«li Fungn*.
The greatest curse to the apple-
growing sections of Illinois Is the* up-
pie scab fungus, and the department
of horticulture of the Agriculture Ex-
periment Station of the University of
Illinois Is in receipt of hundreds of
letters which show that the apple
growers recall it this fact, and that In-
formation which will enable tnem to
combat it successfully Is desired. For
this purpose the department has in
press bulletin No. 54 entitled "Spray-
ing Apples, with Special lteferonce to
A | pie Scab Fungus." This bulletin
contains twenty live illustrations and
gives the results of careful experiments
and observations in combating tills
disease. It also contains Information
in regard to machinery used for spray-
ing purposes. This bulletin should
certainly be in the hands of every
grower of apples In tho state, and
those who do not receive our bulletins
