New Equipment For the Rock Island.
It has just been aunonnced that to
provide for the increased volume of
traffic on Rock Island lines a large
amount of new equipment will be
delivered, dutiug the month of
March, on orders placed several
months ago. It is indicative of the
industrial and commercial prosperity
of Rock Island states that, even be-
fore the receipt of the new equip-
ment, it has been found necessary to
place another large order for deliv-
ery in the early sum n ; r.
The rolling stock which will be
placed in service this month includes
twenty new pattern passenger cars
from the Pnllman shops, which em-
body so many comfort-contributing
deuces that they make a distinct
advance in day passenger equipment.
This new departure will come as a
surprise to the western traveling
public. Ten of the cars will be sev-
enty-foot chair cars, furnished with
sixty-fonr twin reclining chairs,
seating as many people. The interi-
or finish is Mexican mahogany: deco-
ration is olive green, with plain
green lines and the chairs are uphol-
istered in green. The cars are
equipped for lighting both by Pintsch
gas and electricity and are fitted
with electric fans, for ventilation
and cooling.
The other ten cars are seventy-foot
vestlbuled coaches, with seating ca
pacity for eighty. The seats are
npholstered in maroon plush; other
wise the decorations the same as in
the chair car. All the cars have
very large double plate glass windows
and are equipped with Pullman stan-
dard six-wheel trucks.
One new feature that will be-in
troduced in these cars is an improved
draft gear with 125,000 pounds spring
capacity. This is about six times the
spring capacity of the ordinary pas-
senger coa:h. On heavy trains,
pulled by giant locomotives, this in-
creased capacity of draft gear pre-
vents disagreeable jars in starting
and stopping of trains.
An order is also in for over 4,000
freight cars of various kinds includ-
ing
1500 refrigerator cars
1500 bex cars
500 furniture cars
465 coal flats
350 special design dump cars
250 convertible coal and ballast
cars.
25 drop bottom stock cars.
The Rock Island \rill also receive,
during March, 65 new locomotives of
various kinds, Including twenty
Pacific type passenger, ten Atlantic
type passenger, fiften freight and
twenty switch engines.JAn additional
order for fifty locomotives will be
placed in the near future, for deliv-
ery In the summer-
Of the new motive power to be de-
livered this mouth, six of the passen-
ger engines are to be equipped with
a new super-heatiug deyice, being
the latest development in locomotive
construction, to secure economy in
the generation and efficiency in the
use of steam. Briefly, the device
consists of return steam flues inside
the upper fire tubes leading from the
firebox. The steam from the dome
in passing througk this system Is ex-
posed to heat which ralse9 Its tem-
perature, evaporating entrained wa-
ter and the steam passes perfectly
dry to the cylinder.
This new equipment, which is to be
added to from time to time, places
the Hock Island In the front rank
among western railroads In the mat-
ter of transportation facilities. The
foresight manifested in thus meeting
and adequetely providing for, the
exigencies of Increased traffic, is
characteristic of the progressive poi-
ANOTHER FIRE
INDUNBARTON HEIGHTS
The Home of Mr. Pratt in Asbes.
Caused ba Boiling Tar in the
Kitchen.
At 2:30 this afternoon the steam
boat whistle, used for a fire alarm at
the water works, warned the people
that a fire was raging somewhere.
The fire department pulled north on
a dead 1 un. The fire proved to be
in the cottage home of Mr. Pratt, a
fireman oftbe d.E. & G. road, on the
the corner of 12th and Locust streets
in Dunbarton Heights. Most of the
furniture and clothing was rescued
before the fireman's arrival. They
were compeled to attach the hose to
a plug on the corner of Independence
and Chesnut streets a distance of two
blocks from the fire.
Of course by the time the fireman
were rea#y to apply the water the
flames had enveloped the house
almost distroying it entirely.
It seems that Mr. Pratt was heat-
ing some tar on the kitchen stove to
repair the roof of the bouse when it
boiled over and set fire to the kitchen
making a volume of flame that could
not be put out with the little water
at band.
The cottage was a five roomed af-
fair, formerly owned by Ben Metlott.
The loss will probably reach 81.0J0.
We were not informed whether it was
insured or not.
Growing
appreciation of our,
services is plainly
apparent. Every
day sees new people
coming here for
Pianos.
And we have yet
to have a single
one go away disap-
pointed. The stock
of Pianos shown
here is such that
tastes and require
ments can be sup-
plied. And there is
a quality about the
kind we keep that
Insures respect. We
say nothing of our
prices, they speak
eloquently for them
selves.

RKAD IT THROUGH.
Tuould Spoil t/iis Story to Tett it in the
Headlines.
To use an eighteenth century phrase
this i# an "o'er true tale." Having
happened in a small Virginia town in
the winter of 1902, it is a story very
much of the present. Uptoashart
time ago Mrs. John E. Harmon, of
Melfa Station, Va., had no personal
knowledge of the rare curative pro-
perties Of Chamberlain's Cougi
Remedy. Last "January" she says,
"my baby took a dreadful cold and a
one time 1 feared she would have
pneumonlai but one of my neighbor*
told me how this remedy had cured
her little boy aud I began to give it
to my otby at once and it soon cured
her. I heartily thank the manufact-
urers of Cnamberlaln's Cough Reme-
dy for placing so g-ieat a cure within
my reach. I canuot recommend k
too highly or say toomuch in its tat or
I hope all who read this will try it
and be convinced as I was." For saw
