Lewis had a brief though bril-

at first for reasons of defective
eyesight, he prevailed upon the
draft board of Noble county to
send him to Camp Cody, N. M.,

in as a private in a company of
infantry and so ably mastered the
manual and drill regulations that
he was advanced to a corporal in
September while the outfit was at
Camp Dix waiting for boats to get
across. At the same time he was
sought by the regimental band and

Rainbow Division, then with the

He came home with that famous
fighting unit the last of April.
Caught in the draft, and not un-

July 26, 1917. There he was in

There was a representative
gathering of the citizenship of
Oklahoma at the University audi-
torium on Sunday morning, June
8th, the occasion being the Bacca-
laureate exercises in connection
with the commencement exercises
of the University of Oklahoma.
The day was a beautiful one, the
weather being all that could be de-
sired, the result being that the
auditorium was well filled.
The processional of faculty,
alumni and graduates was a very
imposing and impressive one, con-
sisting of more than 300 persons
in cap and gown, and the exercises
were impressive in their simplicity
there being no especial effort to
make them elaborate. They con-
sisted of a the hymn, "Holy, holy,

First M. E. Church of Tulsa, one
of the largest and most influential
churches in Oklahoma, is regarded
as one of the ablest and most elo-
quent divines in the state, anil the
Baccalaureate sermon fully sus-
tained his reputation. His text
was from Acts 19:26, and his sub-
ject was "The Man with Vision,"
impressing upon the graduates
and his hearers the necessity of
having "vision" for the great work
of life, recalling the great ones of
the Earth who had had tha; Vision
and had applied it. The greatest
quality any man and any woman
i eould have, the one they must have
to be successful in the right mean-
| ing of that word, was "moral pur-
! ity," and he denounced the idea
that there should be a double
standard in dealing with those
guilty of impurity; one standard
must be maintained by the success-
ful man or woman. "Service" to
God and fellow-man, was impress-
ed upon the graduates, as the
thought that should actuate
them in their coming lives, for
money alone would not make them
successful.
