Senator Heveriilg'c. of Indiana,
who recently returned from the
Philippines, where he made an
exhaustive fier-onal investiga-
tion of affairs, was warmly wel-
comed liv President McKinley, to
whom lie made a very full state
meat, during conferences cover-
ing a considerable portion of
three consecutive days. It is
known that t he president consid-
ers the information brought, him
to be important. and that much
of it is confirmatory of what
Prof. Hctmrmau had already told
him.
Prig.-Gen. < Ivenshinc, late com-
mander of the second brigade of
Lawton's division. Eighth Army
corps, is in Washington on sick
leave. He said of his Philippine
service: "I had in my brigade the
Wyoming, North Dakota and
Idaho regiments of volunteers,
and the Fourteenth infantry of
regulars, anil was in the south-
ern part of Luzon with Lawton,
about six weeks. We captured
everything we went after, anil
field every city we took.” Gen
Ovenshine says lie thinks the
next campaign will wind up the
relwllion. (>f t lie men s rations,
lie said: “We hud the best Aus-
tralian beef a till mutton, even
(letter than you gel in Washing
ton. (hir other supplies were
equally as good, and there was
no complaint.” and of another
story widely published, he said:
"As to the reports of Filipino
soldiers unit dating our dead and
our soldiers mutilating the
enemy tor revenge. 1 neiei saw a
single ease of any kind of unit i I a
turn and dun i believe there was
any with Lawton sioiiimand.
