must make as little noise as possible."
.lie torched the spiug lu rrout of
him. A panel slid back, and we stepped
into a magnificent picture gallery.
Scarcely had we entered, when Jack
Craig came through another door.
You villain!" cried my companion.
"Now I meet you face to face. We
will light a duel to a tinlsh, and the
weapons shall be swords!*
llefore Craig could Interfere the other
had taken two weapons dowu from the
wall.
"'Take one of these!" he commanded.
"If you are a gentleman you will uot
refuse!"
Crai- chose a sword reluctantly, and
the next niomeut the swords clashed.
I hastened away towards the grand
staircase to summon help, when I per-
ceived an old geutlemati hurrying up
the stairs us fast as hii feeble legs
would penult.
'It is the clashing of swords in the
picture gallery!" he muttered. "Ac-
cording to the tradition of my fore-
fathers. It U a sign that a Wilbur hati
returned I must hasten, before I am
too late to welcome him."
As the old man entered the room
there was a cry, and the strange young
man fell to tie ground, the blood flow-
ing freely from his chest.
"What Is the meaning of this?" de-
manded the old man abruptly.
"This mau came here with the -story
that be was your son." said Jack Craig,
"and 1 have given him what he Justly
deserved."
I stooped down instantly and tore
open the man'* shirt.
His wound was not serious, but I no-
ticed something on his chest with joy.
"Mr. Wilbur," I suid. "has your son u
birthmark Just below the throat?"
The old muu hobbled over to where
I was kneeling by the side of the body.
He gazed down at the white face of
the man upon the carpet. Then, with
a shrlef of Joy. he fell upon his knees
and kissed the face of the man again
and airain.
"My son—ray son!" he cried Joyfully.
"My long-lost son hus returned!"
P.y this time the gallery was full of
servants and the rightful heir was car-
ried to a bedroom. Mr. Wilbur then
turned his attention to the imnoster;
but he wns nowhere to be found, and
up to this day he lias never been seen
uor heard of.

suld the young man to the chief; and it
may surprise you when I tell you I am
the son of Mr. David Wilbur nud the
last of that wealthy family. Ten years
ago my father, iu a fury, ordered me
to leave the house. I did so. and made
my way to the jtold Held*. Here 1 mot

"About three months ago 1 was lying

At Hempstead l followed him to the

the young fellow was nbout to enter,
a man in riding-breeches, and carrying

"Mo. you're'not!" cried the butter, "for

"How silly you both are!" said the

And then the baking powder and cur-
