"She Isn't cxao'ly stylish-lookln'"
said Tad viewing Miss Tolly critically
from hlspolntof observation "butsho's

No Tolly was -not stylish-looking.
Her checks wcro as rosy anil round ns
a lliildwin apple-and her small noso
net Innocent of freckles. Then too
her mouth was rather large though ono
forget Its size In tho kindliness of her
smile which moreover showed a very
perfect set of small even white teeth.
Tolly had a patr of pleasant dark eyes

almost black and she viae itlso tho pos-
sessor of what tho novcliMs all "a

Tolly briefly summed tip Iicr own per-

"red hair freckles and a sntll-nosci"
nnd no amount of reasoning could con-
nco her sho wa& not undeniably plain
or as sho unhesitatingly aillimcd
"awful homely."
"I don't believe It's polite to stare at

denly thorightTad. And vaguely won-
dering nt his own newly-awakened
sense of propriety Tad settled back In
his cozy nook and pulling out his three
papers began running over tho "Lost"
columns but his search was in vain.
Watches had been lost diamonds
sutleu gold-headed canes taken by mis-
take and pet poodles lured from their
homes for tho rccoTcryof each and all
of which rewords were offered with tho
suggestive "no questions asked" as an
extra Inducement for- their return.
Hut there was no reference in any of
tho papers to "a small alligator-skin
sachel with nickel mountings left by
mistake In tho waiting-room of tho
Ilroad Street depot" or words to that
tfiVct; and Tad began to wonder what
ho had best do next. Ho could not ad
vertiso under'tho head of "Found" fur
fivo cents was all tho money Tad had
in the world; so finally ho was forced
to tho condition that all he could do
wni-to use his own unspoken thought
"to hang on a spell longer."
It was much harder to decide what
ho huuld do with himself. Tho bag
had f omo ono to look out for it but
there was no one to look out for Tail.
And for tho first tlrao In his short life
a .feeling or something like
homesick!
cknesa creep over him.
A fnmillat voice on the wharf clnso
to the pile of cotton bale? aroused Tad
ve'ry suddenly from his ruvcrio."
."It's that Jones!" lie oxcitislly ex-
claimed though under his breath as
lo peered down at tho speaker. It was
indeed that ingenious gentleman as
lifting his hat with t Inning politeness
ho had accosted Miss Tolly who was
uvideutly Impressed at such a dlspljy
of courtesy.
"May I ak mis" said Jones call-
ing tip his moat agreeable smile
"whether von have seen n shnbbv-look-

"Why. yes ho was down here awhile
ago hut I gus ho's jrono nn-town

called himself Tad Thornc.
Mr. Jones looked sadly disapiHilnted

at himself chuckled silently. WJiat

"Aow then fcphr'm.' said Captain

of tlio wharf In n breathless condition
set the basket down with a bang
uhllothn Captain greeted Miss Tolly
with a Jovial wink.
"Haven't got to put back for nothing
this time Tolly" he triumphantly an-
nounced unmindful of the presence of
Mr. Jones whoso abstracted gaze was
seemingly directed at the little pennant
which fioatcd from the schooner's top-

Flagg usually forgot somo part of his

Tolly nodded approvingly at her

glancing thoughtfully nt tho "Mary J."

garded Mr. Jones and his little book

"Kxtrnord'nary!" .thoughtfully re-
pcatcd Captain Hogg leaning up
against a cotton bale and inviting his
companion by n nod to do tho same
"well lemmo overhaul the log a bit

for tho benefit of his daughter who was
regarding tho representative nf the
press with admiring nwc "what night

Was hovo to off Thatcher's Islan'P"
"A week ngo last Thursday"
promptly returned Tolly with a shado-
of sadness In her tone.
"Ah indeed!" rctunied Mr. Jones'
Interestedly as he Jotted something
down in the note-book nnd continued
to write as ho talked. "Hcaty gale. I
presume and man fell from aloft roof-
ing tho a main t'gallant sails?"
Ucgnrdlng tho speaker for a brief mo-
ment in pitying silence Captain Flagg
proceeded to enlighten his Ignorance.
"Only square riggers carries t'gal-
Tns'ls" ho explained "and tho 'Mary
J.' bcin' a forc-an-aftcr has no need
o' scch. Sam" solemnly continued
thn Captain laying his stumpy fore-
finger on Mr. Jones' arm to command
his undivided attention "Sam was n
black pig the cunnlu'ost knowln'cst
why what's that?" he exclaimed
suddenly breaking off In his culogium
on his lost porker as the sound of a
suppressed giggle was heard to pro-
ceed from directly overhead. Turning
his eyes upward as ho thus spoke and
catching a glimpse of Tad's mirthful
faco peering over tho top of tho cotton
bales Captain Flagg's fingers insensi-
bly relaxed their hold upon the
japanned tin caso containing his papers
and money.
Tlds was tho moment for which Mr.
Jones had been watching! Whipping
the tin caso from tho Captain's uu re-
sisting grasp ho dodged round tho pile
of cotton bales before Captain Jethro
could say "Jack Robinson" or l'olly re-
cover her breath to &crcam.
Now despite his sudden ill-timed
mirth. Tad had been sharply watching
the movements of tho erratic Mr. Jones
whoso purposoJ&b had dimly suspected
from the first moment of ids pretended
Interview. And as he snatched the
case Tad scrambling from his hiding-
place with inconechablo rapidity slid
down on the back side of tho cotton
bales just In time to confront the escap-
ing Jones.
Unlike tho average loy-hero cf fic-

Tad who had scrambled to his feet it
a twinkling though only a second oj

self who taking to ids heels with the
speed poetically attributed to tin

among tlio surrounding drays nnd express-wagons.
Without his hat and in a very bewil-

Flagg rolled heavily around tho comet
of the pile of cotton bales. Following
him nt suitable intervals came luoalli-

Tad's honest faco siiono with plcw-
tirable excitement ns he handed tho tls
box to Captain Flagg and began brush-
ing his dusty kneos while Tolly Flagg
smiled her approbation.
"My lad" said Captain Flagg. plac-
ing his big hand on Tad's shoulder "it'l
nigh eight bells come along and hntt
some dinner. We'll talk over matten

An invitation of this sort partial
larly under all th clreuinstancus wai
not to be refused and Tad tecovoring
the sachel from its hiding-place among
the eotton bales accompanied Cap-
tuln Flagg on board of the "Mary

lowed while (ieorgo Washington wni
bringing . tho dinner into tho wiiall

In contributing his own share Tad
insensibly told tho most of his simple
story nfter which l'olly Flagg with
sparkling oy cs related her morning ad-
venture and Tad's connection there-
with; hearing which Captain Jethro
gravely shook hands with Tad across
the table without spoaklng. Indeed
ho finished his dinner in like silauec

dairymen who are not surpassed by
any younger ones was ai follows:
Tho butter was well tnado and ot
fine quality and perfectly free from

perfect keeping of butter in any pack

clasps. The pall was thoroughly soaked
with cold water over night and in the
morning when tho butter was randy I
fur packing tho pall was well scalded '
and then rinsed with salt nnd water.
It was then rinsed with fresh cold
water and the butter was firmly i

1811 gave spaco for such magnificent
modern buildings as the Imperial Tal-

important commercial centers of tho
empire. Tho scene however nt an
early hour of tho day In tho Krcst-
chatlk or chief strcot of tho city be-
trayed the rough and slmplo habits of
thu townspeople. Artisans In coarse
shabby clothes workmen with dirty
boots patched trousers nnd short
coats of sheepskin torn and
greasy wcro proceeding heavily

light tunics wero busy taking down

Laughter at tho Wrong Time.
Laughter at tho right time nnd place
both shows tho man and helps to mako
tho man. Hut as a rule laughter at
one's own witticisms or drolleries is ns
really or.t of plaeo as self-praise. Ho
who does his own laughing at his
bright sayings or doings ns ho who
praises himself seems to leavo noth-
ing for nny one clso to do lu that line.
It appears to bo generally understood
in tho world that there is about so
much laugh or praise fairly duo to
any man's performances. If ho takes
it on himself to do all that for himself
that natuntlly relievos everybody elso
of responsibility In tho same direction;
but If he freely leaves the laughing or
tho praising for others to nttcml to
they are generally ready to do their
part In the premises. There is "a time
to laugh; ' but that time rarely comes
to a man when ho has just said or done
it thing which is intended to make
others laugh. 5. S. Tunes.
Some Ghastly Relics.

South America. Ono of tlio boxes wns
