28 THE INDIAN ADVOCATE
lose heart take good care of yourselves at any cost I will
write home as often as possible.
"My fond husband" replied Mrs. O'Kelly "as for Patrick
and myself 1 have no forebodings but my anxiety for you
shall have no bounds. I know you will be true and faithful
although absent but the uncertainty of war is what trou-
bles me and then again you will be thrown among associa-
tes so different in all respects to what you have been accus-
tomed to. "Mary God is good" ejaculated O'Kelly. And
pressing his son Patrick to his heart he continued: "Oh my
son if I could only infuse into your young mind my own as-
pirations and the purity of my motives embracing the honor
of our ancestors the liberty of our country and the glory of
God I would feel the happiest man on earth.
"Father" earnestly replied the son. "It is true 1 am
young in years but I am resolved to follow your noble exam-
ple and in the whole course of my life never do anything
that would be unworthy of so noble a father". At these
words the brave O'Kelly was overcome with emotion. Then
followed fond embraces and loving farewells as the Mail
Car had already been waiting for some time. That whole
afternoon mother and son consoled themselves with this
thought that Mr.O'Kelly might receive an appointment some-
where in the British Isles and therefore could occasionally
visit him; however the fortunes of war did not realize these
fond expectations.
The following day after Mr. O'Kelly's departure. Mrs. O'
Kelly accompanied her son to the district scat of learning
a modest building and rather primitively furnished. It was
indeed nothing less that "A hedge School" but on a higher
scale than is ordinarily understood by the term. She briefly
explained to Mr.Hullahan the object of her visit and her
great desire to have him do all in his power to have her son
well prepared for the forthcoming competative bink Clerks
xamition.
