Improved Range

Description: Photograph of a heavily timbered area that was in poor range condition. Early June 1955 tow pounds of Kuron (propionic acid) per acre was applied by aero plane. All vegetative growth of shrubs and trees was controlled on 90 % of the shrubs and trees. A definitive percentage of tree kill could not be determined at this time but a tremendous growth of primarily little bluestem can be observed even directly underneath the trees. Gully at Sandstone Creek

Description: Photograph of head of active gully typical of many that dreain into Sandstone Creek. Note mass of earth that slipped into the gully a day or so before the picture was taken. Gullies like this contribute tremendous amounts of sediment and flood water to the streams below.

Description: Photograph of range. Good stand and cover development in one growing season. Part of the cover consists of broomweeds and Johnson grass which will be replaced with better grasses under proper management. Planting has not been grassed to date. This planting was made in the spring of 1958 and the mixture consisted of grama and some bluestem grasses. OK-488-1-B.

Description: Photograph of native grass planting. Good stand of mixed native bluestem grasses planted in 1957 and grazed off during the past winter. This pasture is now deferred. It is on the east side of road across from a 1956 native grass planting. The fence was removed in 1958 and was thrown in with the big pasture and shows the result of being subjected to heavy grazing. It has deteriorated in condition from the time the photo was made on 1957-05-15. OK-487-8-B.

Description: Photograph of 67-day-old NK 37 Bermuda grass from seed sown in deep, medium-textured, slowly permeable Latimer County soil. Grazing has been restricted to date. (1/2 pound seed and 125 pound 10-20-10 fertilizer per acre). Field lined with previous bermuda grass establishment. Hop and white clover to be seeded in September at time of applying 100 pounds of 0-20-0 fertilizer. OK-913-5.
