Description: Photograph of range. Good stand and cover development in one growing season. Part of the cover consists of broomweeds and Johnson grass which will be replaced with better grasses under proper management. Planting has not been grassed to date. This planting was made in the spring of 1958 and the mixture consisted of grama and some bluestem grasses. OK-488-1-B.

Description: Photograph of native grass planting. Good stand of mixed native bluestem grasses planted in 1957 and grazed off during the past winter. This pasture is now deferred. It is on the east side of road across from a 1956 native grass planting. The fence was removed in 1958 and was thrown in with the big pasture and shows the result of being subjected to heavy grazing. It has deteriorated in condition from the time the photo was made on 1957-05-15. OK-487-8-B.

Description: Photograph of native grass plantings. This is a 1957 Soil Bank planting of a native bluestem grass mixture. The mixture had an extra amount of blue grama added. A goodstand was present on May, 1957 and this photoshows a good cover now developing. There is a good stand now but it will need shredding or moving next June (of 1958) to eliminate weed competition. OK-487-10-B.

Farm Pond Under Construction

Description: Photograph of a farm pond under construction with two dozers. This pond is being constructed in range land to store water for livestock. Construction shows how dozers are working the mud out of the pond basin. The deposit of mud was caused by water seeping in from above.

Two Herds of Cattle Watering From Large Stockwater Pond

Description: Photograph of two herds of cattle watering from a large, sectioned stockwater pond. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Cattle coming in for water in farm pond. This pond has been fenced into 2 sections so it may be used by cattle in both pastures of a 2 pasture grazing rotation system. In addition to native grass the cattle on this range get 5 pounds of cake per day. Steers are bought in and fed out in addition to the steers raised from the basic heard [sic]."

Timber Cleared as Part of Brush Control

Description: Photograph of timber cleared on part of area prior to 1951. Goats were used to control sprouts. Cover of bluestems and other grasses developed and a cover of sprouts has also developed. This area and creek area were sprayed in the spring of 1957 with 2-4-5T. A good kill of timber was attained and the grass is back to excellent.

Farm Pond Construction

Description: Photograph of farm pond construction showing how the base of the pond is cleared off and the soil is pushed up to the back side. This top soil will be pushed up to the top and back sides of the 3:1 slope on the pond. This will aid in controlling erosion and will make establishment of a vegetative cover much easier. This type construction is required in the Jefferson County Soil Conservation District.

King Ranch Bluestem Planting

Description: Photograph of King Ranch Bluestem planting in the spring of 1951. An annual average of 3000 pounds of seed are gathered from this 100 acre planting. L.C. Haskins, Jefferson County SCD Mgr., Bob Price, and Hank Bradley inspecting grass and explaining the condition of the grass. This grass was planted on old depleted cropland as a proper land use practice as recommended by the Soil Conservation Service. Blue Stem Mixture with Blue Grama

Description: Photograph of native grass planting made in the spring of 1958. Grass consisted of a bluestem mixture with heavy addition of blue grama and some buffalo. It was shredded in June to control weeds and Johnson grass growth. This is a good stand of grass but the Johnson grass competition is heavy.
