Description: Photograph of land protection via levee ½ miles east of Binger and looking south from a highway bridge on highway 152 on Curtis Opitz’s land. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Looking south from highway bridge on highway 152 east of Binger, Oklahoma [sic]. The field on the right is protected by a levee. This field was of little use due to overflows before the levee was constructed.”

Description: Photograph of cattle grazing on NK-37 Bermuda grass planted on May 30, 1958. Planted in 4 inch flat furrows 16 inches apart. 2 pounds of seed per acre. 150 pounds of 10-20-10 fertilizer applied per acre at time of planting. Grass was 12 inches high 6 weeks after planting. 50 cows and 23 calves turned onto pasture on July 6, 1958. Soil Mapping name--Stidham very fine sandy loam. Badly eroded abandoned cropland. Description: Photograph of terraces. Constructing terraces with two, three bottom plows. This picture shows completed terraces as the 16 round was being made. This terrace is approximately 1000 feet long. It checked out 1.2 settled, height of ridge cross section of channel is 16 sq. ft. Ridge is 20 ft. from channel to toe on back side. OK-745-12.

The left half shows the result after being plowed 20 inches deep. Shinnery oak is completely turned under. The field is to be seeded to sudan grass in 1958 and rye in the fall for winter cover. Sorghum, cover will be established in 1959 for grass seeding. OK-658-7.

Description: Photograph of deep plowing for shinnery oak shrub control. This field is badly infested with shinnery oak, being 5 to 20 feet tall when it was deep plowed. The field was drug with cross ties; [unclear] and seeded to rye in the fall of 1957. 22 acres were deep plowed. Eighty five head of cattle were counted as grazing in the filed in March, 1958. Description: Photograph of Glen Brewer overseeding badly depleted Land Clearance, Cultivation & Brush and Weed Control under his Great Plains Conservation Program contract. The sagebrush has been treated with a one-way plow prior to seeding. An estimated 70-80% of the sagebrush was killed by the one-way plowing, leaving ample residue to protect the land from blowing and provide a firm seedbed for seeding grasses. OK-680-6.

Description: Photograph of conservation crop rotation. Kochia weed and salt grass on salt area where it is very difficult to get crops started. The problem is this—getting the crops started. Volunteer kochia weed serves as a priority treatment to get a cover on the land. At certain stages cattle graze readily and it supplies a large amount of organic material when plowed down in a seed-bed preparation. OK-745-2.
