The sagebrush has been treated with a one-way plow prior to seeding. An estimated 70-80% of the sagebrush was killed by the one-way plowing, leaving ample residue to protect the land from blowing and provide a firm seedbed for seeding grasses. OK-680-6.

Description: Photograph of conservation crop rotation. Kochia weed and salt grass on salt area where it is very difficult to get crops started. The problem is this—getting the crops started. Volunteer kochia weed serves as a priority treatment to get a cover on the land. At certain stages cattle graze readily and it supplies a large amount of organic material when plowed down in a seed-bed preparation. OK-745-2.

Hay and Pasture Crop Rotation

Description: Photograph of Hereford calves grazing first year alfalfa on 20 acres cut off by electric fence. Four head of calves placed on pasture April 10 and remained until date of photo, May 13, 1958. From that time 20 head have been grazing. These 20 are barely keeping up with new growth. Calves will remain on pasture until such times as it seems necessary to remove them to get one good cutting of hay in addition to pasture.

Irrigation Border Construction

Description: Photograph of construction being completed of a border irrigation system. The borders are on a 50 foot spacing in this project. The water for the system will come from 3 wells which produce 2500, 1700 and 700 gallons per minute. This system was designed and supervised by the Soil Conservation System.
