Description: Photograph of Hilly Stony Savannah on southwest slope of Mt. Pinchot Mountain Escarpment at top is the highest point n the Wichita Mountains. This is thought to be the only area of natural cedar on the refuge. Small open areas are typical of this range site.

Description: Photograph of Wilson DeGroot and wife packaging strawberries. Good soil management makes strawberries. Contour rows, fertilization and check-row cultivation has simplified labors. This "pick-em-yourself" four acre project grossed $1,600 in 1960. Over 2,000 people picked for home use according to DeGroot. This retired bricklayer says his hobby is interesting and profitable.

Description: Photograph of Bermuda grass harvesting. District harvesting Bermuda grass roots. This field was sprigged to Midland Bermuda grass in the spring of 1959 and has had two growing seasons with heavy grazing each year. This area harvested (= one-sixth of an acre) produced 200 bushels of roots per acre. With current cost rates would amount to $480 worth of roots per acre. OK-1380-1.

Range Sites - Stony Hills

Description: Photograph of Hilly stony range site showing open area in foreground, and then savannah. Lines of savanna follow geologic faults on the background slopes. This geologic and vegetative pattern creates a large amount of "edge" which makes a very favorable habitate for deer and elk.
