Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (RI) Train Wreck of 5017 on "Golden State Ltd."

Description: A photograph print showing the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (CRIP, RI, or ROCK) 5017, 4-8-4, on RI train No. 4, "Golden State Ltd.", on its side, struck an auto at a crossing which then caught in switch points derailing the train about 6:40 pm, Jan. 23, 1938, just west of Topeka, KS. No one injured. Wreck cleaned up by K.C. Terminal and RI wreckers. [see also 2008.008.1035, 1036 & 5511]

Bridge collapsed and engine pulling the Gold Ball Freight went into the Cimarron River at Arkalon, KS, on August 18, 1938. It was in the river some time before recovery. Photo date about 9/28/1938.
