Alfalfa Being Readied for Baling

Description: Photograph of an 8 year old stand of alfalfa being readied for baling. W. M. McCarty, work unit conservationist for the Soil Conservation Service, holds up some of the mowed alfalfa. This stand received 2 tons of lime per acre when planted and a light application of sheep manure. It yielded 1. 5 tons per ace by the end of the third year. Proper Land Use

Description: Photograph of productive soil maintained and improved on a 2% slope by use of conservation practices. Land is terraced and contour farmed and crops are rotated. Soil improving crops are used regularly. The crop of oats, now on the land show lodging because of excessive rainfall as did practically 100% of all small grain in the district in 1957. Oats were 5 feet high and promised a good yield when the rains started. Soil Unit 6CP.

This land had been formerly cultivated and is now being planted with native bluestem grasses, using an Ezee-Flow fertilizer spreader as a planter and a rotary hoe cultivator being pulled in reverse.
