Caption: "Three businesses in downtown El Reno were destroyed by a fire that wiped out a quarter of a block Monday night and threatened to engulf the main shooping district in what was described as the town's "worst fire in 20 years." Damage estimated ranged up to $500,000. Flames roaring 75 to 80 feet in the air swept through the Fryberger building, a three-story structure housing the Brinkley furniture store, the Parks Furniture and appliance and the C. R. Anthony store. Two firemen were overcome by smoke, but no serious injuries were reported...Fire chief Leroy Searcy placed the damage at more than $100,000, but insurancemen estimated $500,000. Searcy called it the city's costliest fire in 20 years...Still burning but under control at midnight, the fire spread to the city hall to the rear of the Anthony's shortly after 6 p.m. When a cloud of smoke and sparks exploded from the inferno. Minor fire damage was done to the city hall, but heavy losses were caused by smoke and water. Flames from three burning stores lighted downtown El Reno Monday night in the city's worst fire of 20 years."
