Caption: "One of the worst spring blizzards in decades swepts out of the western plains into the Great Lakes area Monday with diminishing but still potent force. It left in its wake at least 30 dead in eight states plus uncounted property damage. It also stranded for many long hours - in some cases days - hundreds of train and bus passengers and countless motorists, and isolated dozens of comminities. Some cities and towns were entirely cut off from the outside world as wet, heavy snow and winds up to 74 miles an hour snapped power and communication...Approximately 440 passengers of two trains stuck in western Kansas since Sunday were removed by school buses late Monday. Some had been ill. Most were simply tired and hungry. Some 200 passengers aboard the westbound City of St. Louis, stuck near Winona, Kan., were taken to Oakley, Kan., the Union Pacific......One of the passangers removed from the City of St. Louis to Oakley, Kan., was given insulin treatment and was said to be recovering. he was identified as George A. Vrilakas of Roberta, Calif. The storm dead were distrbuted this was: New Mexico 1, texas 7, Oklahoma 5, Kansas 3, Nebraska 3, Iowa 1, Illinois 7, and Indiana 3. The toll was expected to rise as clearing skies and melting snow opened roads and made it possible for rescue workers to reach more stranded automobiles.
