Gully at Sandstone Creek

Description: Photograph of head of active gully typical of many that dreain into Sandstone Creek. Note mass of earth that slipped into the gully a day or so before the picture was taken. Gullies like this contribute tremendous amounts of sediment and flood water to the streams below.

Description: Photograph of gully looking downstream from the head shown in Okla. 10, 524-A. Recently fallen masses of earth are seen all along the bottom. The next rainfall run off through the gully will take this earth on into Sandstone Creek. Diversions, drop inlets, and gully plugs are used to stop this damage from gullies of this type.

Little Bluestem Planting Erosion Control

Description: Photograph of Little Bluestem planting on formerly cultivated wind eroded land. Grass in foreground is gowin on spot where topsoil was blown away. The grass, although not as vigorous as in other spots, is providing cover and will eventually cover completely. Such land should nto be cultivated but can provide good forage if properly cared for.

Flood Prevention Treatment

Description: Photograph of flood prevention treatment on sandstone Creek Watershed permitted Roy E. Baker to put this 16-acre bottom land field into productive use. He got five cuttings of alfalfa-1729 bales - during the dry 1952 summer. Growth for the fourth cutting was without rain. Baker says the detention dam in his pasture furnished stock water at a time when other supplies were failing.
