Washita River Channel Cutting

Description: Photograph of channel cutting by the Washita River. East of river bridge. Note corn field being destroyed by Washita River channel cutting. Two days after this picture was taken, approximately 1/2 of Washita River bridge on Highway 77 was destroyed. The channel cut 50 additional feet at this location where telephone pole is standing in this picture. Approximately 2,000 acres of valuable Washita bottomland were destroyed in April and May 1957 by channel cutting.

Description: Photograph of US Highway 77, 6 miles south of Pauls Valley Okla. The Washita River channel completely destroyed approximately 300 feet of the highway and embankment. $625,000 has been appropriated for a new bridge at a new location.

Washita River Channel Cutting

Description: Photograph of the Washita River channel cutting at U. S. Highway 77 bridge 3 miles northwest of Pauls Valley. It was estimated that the Washita channel widened 100 feet in 112 river miles from Lindsay, Okla. To Arbuckle Mts. Approximately 2000 acres of valuable Washita bottom lands were destroyed in April & May of 1957 by channel cutting. Note the gas line being uncovered by channel cutting. Severe Channel Cutting by Washita River

Description: Photograph of US Highway 77, 6 miles south of Pauls Valley Okla. Severe channel cutting occurred during the storms received in April and May 1957. This highway was completely destroyed. Plans are to build a temporary road to this bridge. $625,000 has been scheduled to relocate this bridge and highway.
