STILL IN THE BALLANGES.
- The Issue Seams To Be
War, Or Oishonor.
it Will Be War.
The war news is made up from
the dispatches sent each day from
Havana, Washington. Madrid, and
other places.
Each day's news puts a different
aspect on the situation and we can
only guess what will follow. Even
as we write this .Monday morning,
rumors are flying that Spain has
algeadv declared war. But this
I *" ,
is hardly true. It is enough to
make the average American asham-
ed, when he sees the dodging
schemes and chicanery of those who
are influential with the govern-
ment. The all powerful Mark
Hanna has from the start discour-
aged war. The murder of our sai
lors and the affront to our nation-
al honor counts for nothing with
such men as lie, when opposed to
his monetary interests.
But the delay is angering the peo
pie generally and it is pretty cer-
tain that if nothing else will nerve
the administration to do its duty
political expediency drive it to war.
The Chicago Times-Herald con-
sidered as the president's personal
organ comes out in a strain that is
shameful, but significant. It re-
cognises that the financial lords are
holding back the president, and it
pleads with the money classes to
cease their opposition to war.
U asks them the success of
Free Silver would not hurt them
worse than war, and pleads with
them to permit war as the only
method of defeating rfee coinage.
The pi eparations for war contin-
ue though Congress has, as yet,
made no extraordinary appropria-
tions. Senator Frye, of Maine,
has expressed the opinion that war
is inevitable and this means a good
deal.
The Board of Inquiry is still at
work—whether purposely delaying
a report till the country can get
ready for war or whether it is
really hunting for new evidence,
we do not know. But the strain
cannot be kept up much longer.
We, too, delieve war is inevitabte.
