“Silence To The Critics”
In an editorial published in the
Oklahoma City Times on Tues-
day of last week appearing,
sand witched between “wild
clamors for free speech,” and
“giving the stomach a rest”
Editor Edgar emits a whine
much resembling the tuneful lay
of a long eared hound baying at
the beauties of the silvery moon,
in which he intimates under an
article entitled “To Silence Elec-
tion Critics” “that there is no
virtue save in Gaul; that there is
no manhood save in Rome;” and
that there is no honesty save in
the Grand and Glorious Republi-
can party of Oklahoma county.
And as the moon, seemingly to
him, gracefully closes one eye,
he opines that, perhaps, a meek
and lowly follower of the lamb
alone might be able to work the
mythical changes necessary to
a square deal.
We gather from his graceful
pose that he stands aloft and
alone the only honest, sincere
and capable inhabitant of this
good county. He insists that his
view is the only one. Like the
Jews that stood upon Mt. Tabor
and gazed out over the fertile
little plain of Esdraelon and gaz-
ed upon that city in which they
centered all their hate for having
brought to earth the saviour of
mankind, they said “there is no
good thing can come from Naz-
areth.”
It seems to us that in every
campaign for the last twenty-
five years we have heard this
same mournful song, emitting
from the lips of the mouth-
pieces of the republican party.
Oh, how they howled at Bryan!
How heavenly the chbrus sound-
ed when they howled at Parker!
And how the tail wagged the
hound when they howled at Wil-
son! When the flood of popular
sentiment backed by the demo-
cratic votes of this country,
placed the reigns of government
in the hands of Woodrow Wilson
we thought this howl emitting
sj>ecie had been eternally lost,
but no, here and there through-
out the evening we again begin
to hear his hungry whine. In
reading this article in which he
says “that all over the state,
Oklahoma county has been
known as one of the rottenest of
all in election stealing,” one is
left with that same vague im-
pression that he has heretofore
experienced in listening to the
sad music of the whine. He
fails to make it plain to us
whether it is the republican
member or the democratic mem-
ber of the county election board,
since he says - the minister will
not know anything about the
running of the machinery that
is liable to do this stealing. The
fact is that he is in the same
position that the once honored
leader and former unregenerate
boss of the rapacious republican
organization of the plutocratic
United States Congress, the
putrid and Honorable J*>seph G.
Cannon had when he went out
with his brother Bill in the fog
of the early morning to feed the
mule. He said “we never could
tell whether he was kicking be-
cause he was braying, or bray-
ing because he was kicking.

The News wants all candidates
to understand thac it will not
single out any democratic can-
didate for office, for special sup-;
port, except Ji^ge Williams for
governor, and W. L. Alexander:
for state treasurer. Mr. Alex-
ander is an old tijner in this
county, and the News is glad to
give him its support.
The editor believes that a
democratic newspaper has no
call of duty or justifiable author-
ity to exercise anv special intei-
est in behalt of any democratic
candidate before the primary,
when the duties of the office to
which he aspires, call only for
personal honesty, ability andj
clerical efficiency. It would be
difficult to advocate the nomina-
tion of one county candidate over
that of another without entering
into personalities. I he News,*
therefore, desires to extend j

A marked copy of the Oklaho-
ma News comes to our desk in
which that socialist muckraking
sheet tells its readers that the
political clouds are looking
mighty dark to Judge R. L.
Williams, and the Judge being
greatly alarmed over the pros-
pects of a cyclone has changed
campaign managers. George
Smith, editor of the Chandler
Tribune has been William’s man-
ager since the campaign started
and has never been turned out,
as the Oklahoma News has re-
ported several times. The fact
is, the News has tried to hold
the Williams management up for
some money, and when Mr. Smith
refused to contribute to the
socialist press they try the black-
mailing scheme. The reading
public knows that the political
buncombe printed in the Oklaho
ma News is a fake. Such stories
only make that paper rediculous.

The state election board Satur-
day ratified the appointment of
J. E. Disch as chairman of the
Oklahoma county election board.
Mr. Disch is a minister of the
gospel, and has always taken an
active part in democratic politics
in this county. His appointment
assures every candidate of an
honest count, Colonel Edgar to
the contrary notwithstanding.
