Kindness Is the tia«ls of true polite-
ness. When we endeavor to aid
others througli kindness and not from
any selfish motives, we are arc per-
forming an act of true politeness, one
which will make the receiver feel
an Interest In him and desire to be
helpful to him. Our gratitude and
sympathy should uIbo lielp us to be
polite.
When we remember the little acts
of kindness which we sooften receive
we feel grateful and long to recipro-
cate, and when wc sympathize with
persons our «ympathy makes us more
thoughtful nt their needs and we are
more ready to wateh for ways In
which wc can expte*s our sympathy
than we otherwise would b<;

Of all the sources from which dls
courtesies arl-c, cowardice Is one of
the lowest forms. We be ome
afraid to a t rs we J,hink and that
lowers us In our own estimation as
well as in that of others. We soon
become lost to all sense of feeling and
gradually sink lower and lower.
Of the many duties given us to per-
form, that of treating others with
courtesy and uindoess is one of the
greatest, and we should endeavor to
guard against, all those vices which
tempt us to do otherwise. It is our
duly, both 11 God and humanity, and
If we faithfully perform it, the world
will be a little better for our having
lived In It.

These who expected something new
in the financial scheme Sen; to con-
gress over the signature of Secretary
Carlisle and so strongly endorsed by
Mr, Cleveland have not yet recovered
from their disnppolntmcnt. Taken
as a whole congress appears to be per-
fectly Indifferent to the scheme, al-
though many of the old members ex-
pressed themselves strongly In favor
of that portion of it which recom-
mends an extension of th2 currency
of n tlonal b.mks when It was first
brought to ti.e attention of congtew
in a bill introduced by Representa-
tive Walker, of Massachusetts,several
years ago The original part of the
Carlisle scheme, thit which provides
for the exemption of state bank cur-
rency from taxitlon, when certain
conditions are complied with, meets
no favor anywhere, except from the
Inllationists from the south. The
sliver men say that the o ily object of
tbc admlnis'.ration In bringing for
ward the scheme at this time was to
wean the southern members from the
s luport of the free coinage of sliver,
and they declare that they Intend to
meet the move by passing a free coin-
age bill and Ignoiirg the administra-
tion scheme nf finance.
Senator Q'lay fays he wants to put
every senator squarely on record on
tbc questl n nf favoring the sugar
trust or opposing It, and for that pur-
pose he has offerei an amtndment to
the house bill putting sugar on the
free list, to mrike out all after the
enacting clause and to Insert a pro
vision f ir the repeal of the differen-
tial duty Imp ised on foreign refined
sugar. There is little probability,
however, thai the amendment will be
acted upon, ns It Is well understood
by democrats as well as republicans
that there Is to be no tariff le^isla-
tl >n at this session.
Senator Lodge's resolution calling
for the much talked axiut report on
Hawaiian matters, which Mr. Cleve-
land wasehtrged with having pigeon-
holed because it favored the republic,
was adopted by the senate with a
whirl, and the report will be made
public In a few days. The same reso-
lution also asked for the correspond-
ence relating to the Hlueflelds affair.
Senator Lodge says: "I expect some
Interest ng disclosures. Admiral
Walker's report on Hawaii is said to
be mighty Interesting reading, and
there are many things connected with
the Hluefield's affair which have not
yet come out One of them, the mur-
der of a citien of this country, was
referred to in the president's message, j (1 ABKHNKTH Y
and I have been given to understand
that many Americans have been
lugged off and maltreated. It will
be a good thing to have all the fucts
come out."

The purchase is an important one
