Modern Etiquette
Q. Is it proper to srp coffee, tea
or water at the table to help wash
down the food?
A. Never: the mouth should al-
ways be empty before taking any
drink. The only exception to this
rule is when one has accidentally
taken unbearably hot food into the
meuth—then one is privileged to
take a quick sip of water.
Q. If a man is walking with a
woman and someone who is a
stranger to him speaks to his com-
panion. should he also return the
salutation?
A. Yes, always, by lifting his
hat.
Q. Is it proper to mail engraved
announcements of an engage-
ment?
A. This is not customary. Usu-
ally the engagement is announced
by the girl's parents at a tea or
party, or by way of a newspaper
announcement.
Q. When one is a guest at a
small dinner, should c.ne accept a when a guest refuses a dish. One
helping of every dish offered? Jeon always manage at least a
A. Yes. We all have our likes j small quantity,
and dislikes, but at a small dinner I Q. When you are having lunch-
it is embarrassing to the hostess eon with several friends in a pub-
lic dining room, and an acquaint-
ance of yours stops at your table
for a fpw words, is it necessary
that you introduce him to each?
A. This is not at all necessary.
