Sapulpa, Mar. 2 (/P)—Beryl Mc-
Hsmm’s long fight for an honor-
able discharge from the army will
be continued despite President
Rcosevelt’s veto ef a bill that
would have granted McHamm a
complet' pardon, friends of the
former soldier said today.
McHamm Is listed as a deserter
in the war department records.
For nearly four years, friends in
the American Legion have sought
congressional action which would
restore to McHamm the benefits of
an honorably discharged soldier
They succeeded in getting through
the present session of congress a
Mil which would have granted the
Saoulpan an honorable discharge.
President Roosevelt yesterday re-
turned the bill to congress with-
out his approval. "I am constrain-
ed to take this action on the rec-
ord as reported to me by the 8ec-
retary of War," said the Presi-
dent's veto message. Secretary
Dern had recommended disapprov-
al on the ground that McHamm
who was cited for bravery In ac-
tion In France, had deserted in
1922 after he had been allowed to
re-enllst to wipe out the dishonor-
ed- discharge he received after
service with the army of occupa-
tion at Coblenz. Germany.
McHamm was tried by court mar-
shal and sentenced to five years
for .striking fellow soldiers after he
became intoxicated at a cabarete.
The sentence later was shortened to
15 months which he served.
