OUT ON VACATION
“traveling in the gay-friendly world”
By Donald Pile & Ray Williams
“A Different Las Vegas”
For a real change of pace when you
go to Las Vegas, try staying at the Lucky
You Bed &
Breakfast. Owned and run by Ole,
the former Executive Chef to the late Lib-
erace, is a great place to get away from
all the "glitz and glamour" of the Strip.
Ole is an extremely grand host and cer-
tainly goes out of his way to show his
guests the sights and sounds of Las Ve-
gas. He is a trained European Chef and
has lived in Las Vegas for many years.
Ole speaks English, German, French,
Danish, Swedish and Norwegian! The
first night we were there he took us
downtown to the Californian Hotel for
some of the best prime rib we have ever
had for only $5.95 and then we toured
the downtown light show. The next night
he took us to Ellis Island, that is just off
the strip, and we had fabulous pork ribs
and chicken barbeque complete with
corn on the cob and cole slaw for only
$5.95. He had two of his dear friends, Jim
and Hal, join us for dinner and we had a
grand time. Jim and Hal are originally
from Chicago and now reside in Las Ve-
gas. They were witty, fun, funny, inter-
esting and a delight to have as dinner
guests. We miss them!
The Lucky You is nestled in a nice
and quiet neighborhood that is located
just a couple of blocks from the Strip, so
catching a bus to go either downtown or
further down the Strip is quite easy.
There are also some gay bars within
walking distance. The Lucky You has a
lot to offer in the way of amenities such
as clothing-optional swimming pool sur-
rounded by a lush tropical garden includ-
ing dozens of "penis" cacti, sauna, out-
door whirlpool, and hot tub. A marvel-
ous gourmet breakfast is served each
morning by the pool. The swimming
pool is in the shape of the state of Neva-
da with a beautiful fountain coming up
out of the center. Each of the four guest
rooms is equipped with a telephone, TV,
VCR and plenty of videos. With the re-
laxed atmosphere and access to the com-
mon areas, you will feel right at home
here.
The B & B is filled with fine, old Eu-
ropean antiques and furniture including
a fabulous cabinet that was a gift from
Liberace. The web site for the Lucky You
B & B is http://members.aol.com/ha-
ven00069/ and their email ad-
dress is haven00069@aol.com
or you can call directly at (702)
384-1129. What is so great
about staying at the Lucky You
is after you party hearty all day
and night you come back to
this "gay haven" where you
can completely relax, take a
swim, or lay in the sun all in
privacy. We have been to Las
Vegas many times but this was
the most enjoyable visit
that we have ever had
there. It was because of our
stay at the Lucky You B &
B and the gracious hospi-
tality of Ole.
Of course you will
want to do other things
while you are in La^ Vegas
and Ole, having lived there
for such a long time and knowing so
many people, can direct you to the sights
and sounds of Las Vegas and day tours
to Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Laughlin,
alpine mountain tours and in the winter
time to the ski areas.
For the gay bar scene, be sure and
check out Goodtimes, located across
from the Liberace Museum, Angles,
Backstreet, Flex, Gipsy, Inferno and of
course the Las Vegas Eagle which has
"underwear" nights. Most of the bars
don't get crowded until after midnight
which is a good thing to remember since
you will need to take a cab to and from
the bars unless you are driving.
However, the real reason to go to Las
Vegas is for the shows and to gamble.
During the week, shows are much less
expensive than on weekends. Whether
you want to see the big name entertain-
ers or a show revue, you will find plenty
of entertainment here in this wonderful
mecca. Afternoon lounge shows are ei-
ther free or perhaps have a two-drink
minimum. You can "graze" yourself from
hotel to hotel along the Strip by taking
advantage of their free food and drinks.
Be sure and go to old downtown Las Ve-
gas because it has had a complete facelift
and is really suprisingly nice.
Even though Las Vegas is a very gay-
friendly city, you will need to be careful
because there is so much money and so
many tourists there. If you have never
been to Las Vegas, our recommendation
is to GO! And if you haven't been in a
few years, then go again. It is a city that
is forever "re-inventing" itself and now
has finally realized that the people w'ho
go to Las Vegas want to see shows and
gamble, unlike about 10 years ago when
they tried to turn it into another Disney-
land for children. Fortunately that idea
failed miserably.
As we begin a new' year, we wish all
of our readers a very HAPPY NEW
YEAR! Even if you don't have the time
or the money to travel a long distance, at
least make a resolution this year to trav-
el more, meet new' people and see new,
interesting places.
