TOWN PRETTY ONE
Desirable Place for Residence

(BY FRED S PAYNE)
In his vuricrt und divers pcregrina-
tion over this mundane sphere ths
Democrat man struck Gracemont on a
roccnt Saturday. . Gracemont is very
emphatically on tho map of Caddo
county and her people
assured
must positively that eho

Tlo town is prettily built on the
side of a hill and its. citizens are a
united progressive and ehtcrprislng
lot of folks. Thounn ouito young in
tho list of Caddo's many flourishing
towns Gracemont has iio.n doing
things und is still doing them. We
wero tbore on tho birthday of the
town aud wo wish them many pros-
perous returns of tho dav.
The population of Gracemont is
some 250 souls bat is steadily in-
creasing. There are eighteen busi-
ness I'ouses thore a well built brick
hotel run by J. A. Harbour two
gins n bunk and n mill run by 0.
Frodorickson. T. E. Gnssaway nn

furnituro business lie camo from
Toxas nnd originally 'wont into tho
aln business but sold out to his
"Voartnor M. A. H. Davis ' who still
operates the gin while Mr. Gassa-
way went into the furniture line. F.
Fsrcbaugh who is a Caddo county
man. going to Gracemont from
Bridgeport has a largo and well as-
sorted stock of hardware. T. M.
Bailoy who will hereafter revel in
the newsy columns of tho Democrat is
the original old nest egg. Ho got
tboro before tho railroad and set up a
storo the whole stock of which in
voiced at 180.84. Now he has a
largo stock nf general merch'an-
diso and Is doing a fine business and
is a fine fellow generally. This is
another instance of the proper ap-
plication of the early bird uid the

CLEAR THE STREAM
Old Trees to be Taken Out
River
of
The council at its meeting Monday
mgbt decided to clear out the river
for several miles up stream in order
tnat all trees that are now standing
in the water an it is backed up from
the dam may be removed thereby af-
fordirg a clear stream for the entiro
width making n practical boating
and plcasu.'o resort. Not only was
this taken in consideration in deter
mining the action but also the fact
that if allowed to remain these troes
would in time decay nnd fall block-
ing tho stream and causing much
work in removing when they would
bo worthless in overy way. Tho trop's
will bo cut up nnd sold for wood by
thd city the city In this manner re-
alizing enough to bear the qxponse of
clearing thn etreu'm. In accordance
with this action tho wator was let out
of the dam Tuesday morning and it is
expected that the work will be com-
pleted in four or Ave days when tho
water will again be shut off.

Can't Do Without Him
Bill Duncan in "Tho Tiger and tho
Lamb'" is a fat old county sheriff
who would rather borrow a "chaw
of terbacca" from a man than arrest
him. Bill's mother has dubbed him
Cupid ho has a great habit of "butt-
in' In" other folks love affairs and
trying to fix things up. "Bill says"
his ma knowed her business when she
called him Cupid "but as forhimself
ho was too durned fat for any woman
to ever love him. that's why ho has
always been a widower". Bill is also j
a member of the school committco '
but Bill's knowledge was never gain-
od at a school in fact wo doubt if
Bill ever saw the inside of a school
house except when as a member of
of the committ e he does his bost on
examination day and poses on tho
platform besides the teacher with a
very important air. The smallest
pupil in the school no doubt could
floor Bill if he .should over unbend
and put a few questions to the -scholars
but Bill is too wise to take any
chancis. However wo all like Bill-
he is a clnan-mlndid healthy old
chap and "The Tiger and the Lamb"
can't do without him. Ha will be at
the opera house tonight.
