Am Italian Kiperl rml.es the Ameri-
can System of Devclviilns;
fb Mascles.. .. .
Ir. Angela Mosso while in America
made a mvnuta study of the system of
physical education particularly as aar-
ried out at the athletic clubs of Amer-
ican seats of learning lie has just pub-
lished his impressions of that system.
Beginning with Michigan university
better known as Ann Arbor he notes
the fact that with its 11000 inhabitants
that town has in connection with it
school two great gymnasiums one for
women and one for men the former
alone being four times larger than that
of the Universsty of Turin and Jn all
respects superior. "In Italy J he says
"we hnTe in no city a theater or a cov-
ered area so commodious. On
the lower floor it has a pool for swim-
ming the water of which is warmed
in winter. f Outside the gyro
naaiura and around it are two lawn ten-
nis courts for the professors four other
lawn tennis courts for the students and
a spacious park for other games requir-
ing a wider area." Kef erring to the Bos-
ton gymnasium after the Michigan ex-
ercising halls he says: rTbe interest
and the wonder with which these aca-
demic adjuncts inspire me awaken a
sense of melancholy when I think how
far we in Italy are removed from such
nerfection. "It is enoueh" he adds "to
look at the passers-by in the American'
streets to be convinced how much more
. developed and strong are tbey than our
compatriots. -The boys and girls are
in point of pbyskjue superior to ours.
All the public. take interest in physical
exercises every journal being comr
pelled to report athletic competitions
regattas -.football encounters; golf
matches and such like because its read-
ers have even a greater enthusiasm for
these topics than for the strife of par-
ties . America teaches us by the plain.
est and most impressive of examples
that physical education may be car
ried to perfection without any milir
tary object.. In the states no one dreams
of becoming' a soldier. If military force
is required it is provided as in Great
Britain by voluntary enlistment. Kev-
ertbeless America and the British islca
are precisely :the two countries where
physical education has - reached its
highest development. ' My' admiration
for this new world is all the greater
. hen I rellect that its civilization is that
