THANKSGIVING AND HUMILITY.
Last Sunday night the youiJK people's societies over
the country had for their lesson subject "Thanksgiving
and Humility." It is not a bad subject for this time for
old as well as for young. For there can be no true
thanksgiving without humility. On Thanksgiving day
we are too prone as a Ipeople to return thanks in the
pharasalcal manner: to thank God that we are not as
otherpeople are: (hat we have full treasuries and burst-
ing granerles and corn-crllis; that we have been blest
with health; that the sorrows that have come upon oth-
ers have not visited us.
Hut that is not true thanksgiving; that Is mere self-
congratulation. For all our material blessings we ought
Indeed to ba thankful; but we ought to recognize the
fact that our t-mall power has nothing to do with the
sending oftlie abundant rains that bring forth the lull
harvest that sickness and death will come In spite of
our best efforts to prevent them.
Asa nation ours has indeed been wonderfully blest
materially in the past years but have the abundant
harvests that have ere itei all our amazing prosperity
been our harvests or God's? And In return for all this
wealth so richly lavished upon our laud have we made
the return we ought to have made? Are we doing all
we can do to realize the ideal Christian We that each
man should love every other man as ho loves himself?
Sadly we must- acknowledge our failure. In our poll-
ties corruption Is rampant; In our society foulness is ex-
alted; in our business too the old feudal doctrine prevails
that might makes rlht ; even in our cnurcnes ana
great educational institutions the voice of Mammon of-
politics we have the Murphys and the Aldrlches and the
ruptionists; in our society we have the Thaws and the
Coreys and the Yerkeses and the de Cartel lanes and the
whole foul nest that infests New York and Newport; in
our business we have our Rockefellers and our Harri-
mans and our Armours and our Gateses and all our cap-
tains of Industry who steal and plunder on every hand;
even In our churches we have some of these leading
lights of politics of society of business not as humble
repentant sinners but as men to whom the rest of us
look up for advice and leadership.
Don't be alarmed; The Chieftain is not insisting that
civilization is about to perish nor even that the old
times were better than our own. The Chieftain wishes
merely to point out that we have fallen all too far short
of our duty that there is work worlds of wd"rk still
waiting to be done. And so while tomorrow we should
give sincere and grateful thanks for all our blessings
should we not also come away from the service with a
feeling of great humility? Should we not tomorrow
resolve more (Irmly than ever before to do something
during the coming year towards the living out in our
own lives of the precepts of theGolden Rule?
WANT A UNIFORM LAW.
It is certain t hat there will in the constitutional con-
vention be a tremendous tight on the liquor question
and at this time it is impossible to say whether the pro-
hibitionists or the liquor men will be victorious. This
much is certain however that the men now in control
in the convention are in favor of a uniform prohibition
law for the entire state and that if they are able to
hold their forces together such a law will be adopted.
And that is what all good people sincerely hope will be
done.
DEMANDED BY ALL.
A provision has been introduced into the constitu-
tional convention providing for the establishment in thb
new state of a railroad commission similar to the Texas
oommission and also for ttie establishment of a uniform
two cent passenger rate. There should be no discussion
over the adoption of this law. It is one that is favored
by ninety per cent of t he people of the state. They de-
mand its adoption and no oily explanation will be able
to satisfy them if it is not written into the constitution.

Prof. Eliot Was Obliging.
President Eliot of Harvard is no be-
liever In the Rooseveltian spelling re-
form. A young atudect was a candi-
date for the degree of doctor of philos-
ophy. This man adopted spelling re-
form as his particular line of work
and as commencement day drew near
he went to President Eliot with a re-
Quest. "You know Mr. President
he said "that you are proposing to
make me a Ph. D. Now I have made
a specialty of spelling reform and I
always spell philosophy with an 'f.'
I therefore called to ask you if you
I could not make my degree V. D. In
I stead of Ph. D." "Certainly my dear"
I replied the president of Harvard. "In
I fact if vou insist we shall make it
