Ed Coyle of Hush Springs reports
an experiment with a tropical crop
that lists been planted In the neighbor-
hood of Hunt! Springs in Grady coun-
ty that in spite of tie dry season will
make a fairly good yield. It is a
field of thirty acres of Casaba a veg-
etable much after the fashion of a
muskmeloii. The first seeds were
brought to America from the Island
of Ceylon Italy and Persia and were
Introduced in California about six
years ago.
Last year a small patch was plant-
ed In (irady county and a good yield
was gathered. This year a larger
acreage was planted and the experi-
ment has proven highly satisfactory.
Three car loads will be shipped from
Hush Springs this season and many
barrels of pickles are being made.
The crop will be stored In a dry
place and kept until the winter market
and sill be shipped directly to New
York. The Casaha has a rough strip-
ed greenish ' cast and the shape is
much like a small pumpkin. The
flavor is better than a ripe muskmel-
on. The Casaba seed were planted
July .'in and the season this year has
been very much against the growth
of the vineB.
