Sonator Jones' amendment 10
the Indian appropriation bill was
defeated in the U. S senate -y8
torday. The amendment provided
for the schooling of Indian child-
ren at government expense and
authorized the secretary of tho in-

institutions.
Now that nearly all the towns
in the Indian Territory have rolled
up democratic majorities in their
municipal elections statohood
with or without Oklahoma will
hardly be considered. Statehood
for the Ave tribes will come when
ano'her deinocratc administration
comes not before.

The news from Washington iel-
alive to the Cherokee agreement
.4 not satisfactory or encouraging.
The prospect now is that no treaty
will be made or if one is made it
will be very unsatisfactory lo the
Cherokees The Cherokee dele
gation seems to have been pushed
entirely to the wall and that they
have in no fence been able to hold
their own against tho odds they
have met
General John B. Gordon arrived
on the belated Katy train and will
deliver his famouB lecture 'The
last days of the Confederacy"' at
the opera House at 8:30. This
will no doubt be the last oppor-
unity many of our people will
have of hearing the distinguished
Southerner. General Gordon is an
old niun and in a few short yearB
will have passed away as have
most of the illustrious men of his
time.
There is every indication that we
are lo have another long seigo of
waiting for Ihe final allotment and
settlement of land titles in Die
Cherokee nation. The Cherokee
delegation from all accounts have
signally failed to make a treaty
with the government and will
come home having given up llm
task in disgust. Allotment under

greeable and objectionable features

It will require something more
than the failure of tho treaty ur
the enforcement of the obnoxious
Curtis law to retard the growth of
Vinita or to hiudor the general
prosperity ol the country. Of
course tho consummation of a fav-
orable agreement between the
Cherokees and the government
would put new life into husinesp
but the progress and dewlopmenl
of the Indian Territory can scarce

It has been rumored that Judge
Gill made an ordor recently to the
effect that the several commission-
ers of the Northern district bold
court hereafter at but one place
naming Clnremore Sullisaw and

for tliree of the commissioners.
The Sayings today run tho rumor
down and learned that it was part-
ly oorreot: This order lias been
drafted to the above effect but it
has not yet been signed and pro-

congress will no doubt do at tho
present session which will at least
give Wagoner a permanent com
missioner instead of one far only
a few duys in the year.' as has
been the oase for the past twelve
months. Sayings.
In the light of the returns from
tiie towns of the Indian Territory
whore elections were held Tues-
day of this week there is a strong
indication that the Indian Tern-
lory is safely democratic. It is
reasonably certain that the towns
contain a greater proportion of re-
publicans iir-proportion to popula-
tion lliHii tiie country districts.
Tlir?rous(ins for this are obvious.
In the first place every town is the
home of a greater or a fewer num-
ber of government oflicials who
are nothing if not loyal to tho
parly and their numbers to which
may be added their influence go in
a large moasuro to strengthening
tho party machinery. But nutwilli-
standing all this tho returns from
tiie towns of the territory indicate
great uemuoratic strength. This
being true it is therefore very sufe
to surmise that a republican con-
gress will nut want to make a slate
here for some tine to come either
with or without Oklahoma as in
either event it would be demo
cratic.
If the towiibltes and the pay-
ment of the four millions are Ihe
only point?' of diflerenoe between
ihe Cherokees and Ihe DaweB com
mission in tliu mallei of making'
an agreement it looks like those
two points ought lo be compro-
mised or settled in somo manner
They are really not very material
to lh rank ai.d (lie ol Cherokee
citizens. Most of the Indians live
in tjie rural ditttricts and aro not
interested in town. lot speculation
and it is immaterial to litem wheth-
er a high or a low valuation is
placed upon tuwiilola. 1 1 there was
any prospect for tho money de
rived from the sale of lots ever
rent-lung the citizeiiB it might be
different but the chances for such
a ouiisumation are so remote as
to leave 110 encouragement. So
the question of appraisement of
(own lots might bo eliminated from
the body of the agreement and the
division of laud proceed But tho

What They Did Wednesday.
At yesterday afternoon's eeesion
of the grand lodge a board of trus-
tees was aroated to consist of tliree
numbers; election was held and
resulted as follows: A. G. Turk
Checolali threp year term; Wm.
Noble Suuth McAlesler two year
term; G. W. Mowbray Tulsa one
year term.
Last evening about fifty candi-
dates wore "railroaded" through
the Encampment degrees by the
Vinita team and it was a general
verdict that it was onoiof .the most
enjoyable evenings ever spent In n
lodge rooji.
In ihe Masonic hall tho Vinita
loam exemplified the Uebekah
wo'Jr niloh rt-ao piouncod ex-
cellent in every particular.
This forenoon Grand Master
John A. Bright of Kansas arrived
and entertained the grand lodgo
and also the grand assembly with
speeches such as only distinguish-
ed men like him can mako.
Splendid talks were also listen
ed to from Grand Secretary Har-
well ol Tornesseo and Editor
Stephens of the Western Odd Fel-
low published at Topeka. The
paper was adopted as the official
Odd Fellows paper of the torritory
and its editor was elected as an
honorary member of tho grand
lodge or tho territory.
The ma'tor of a widows' and or-
phans' homo for tho torritory was
discussed at considerable longlh
and judging from tho earnestness
which all members enlisted in tho
fight its location will be determin
ed upon before this eession of the
grand lodge is concluded.
Grand Secretary Hatfield who
has held that office tho past four
years tendered his resignation
Tho grand lodge of Odd Fellows
