ABDMOBH FBIDAY SEPT. 21.
Don't forget the meeting at the
city hall next Monday morning.
Matters of importance to every
business man will be discussed.
The coal miners' strike is assum
ing large proportions and indica-
tiona are favorable to a complete
shut-down of all mines in the re
firion affected before the close of
the month.
The situation at Ualveston is
gradually improving and now that
trains are again running into the j
city the work of relief and rehabi-
tation will be much more rapid
than heretofore.
Reports from the Philippines
indicate that the insurgents have
renewed active hostilities and are
giving MacArthnr considerable
trouble. It seems that the ghost
of freedom will not down the ef
forts of 65000 troops to the con
trary notwithstanding.
The allies in China have broken
the peace which has existed since
the capture of Pekin. They at
tacked the forts at Peitsang at
daybreak Tuesday though no
reason for this action has as yet
been given. The Chinese are re
ported as making a "Stubborn de
fense.
Bbtan and Stevenson are at
tracting immense crowds wherever
they speak and the enthusiasm
grows greater all the time. At
McLeansboro 111. Wednesday
1500 people stood in the rain for
An hour to hear Stevenson discuss
the issues of .the campaign. The
popularity of the democratic can-
didates has never been equalled
It seems that the example of
Montana's lieutenant-governor has
not been lost. At Salt Lake City
Utah Wednesday night while
Governor Wells and Secretary of
State Hammond were in Idaho to
see "Teddy the terror" the act
ing governor of Utah appointed a!
democrat to the vacancy in the
United States senate caused by the
deadlock in the last Utah legisla-
- ture.
If anything were needed in ad-
dition to their record of the last
three years to prove the shallow
pretense of the republican plat-
form on the subject of trusts it
is found in the serious deliberate
assertion of Mark Hanna in his
recent Chicago speech. With all
the seriousness and deliberation to
be expected from the boss and
leader of the republican party in a
campaign utterance Hanna as-
sorted that there are no trusts
And yet his platform pledges reg
illation and control of what he
fays does not exist.

Grievance.
Hazelton Pa. Sept. 20 Re
ports received at strike headquar
ters and elsewhere from various
parts of the Uazelton region this
morning give good news to the idle
antVimrntn nnftl miners. The first
news told of a break in the Latti-
mer mines the first that has taken
place there during the strike. - The
colliery there was considered an
invulnerable spot and the break
there put the strikers in a good
humor. The number of men who
auit was qu;e small but the union
mon tire satisfied that they will
make further inroads on the force
The next good news received by
the strikers came from Coleraine
and was to the effect that the col
liery there was shut down. The
McAdoo strikers have been trying
for four days to close this place.
The Evans colliery at Beaver
Meadow also failed to start work
this morning on account of not
enough men putting in an appear
ance to orjerate the workings. Both
the Coleraine and the Evans col
lieries are operated by the A. S
Van Wvckle company. All of this
comraav's mines in the Hazelton
region are now closed
A committee of three miners
employed at . the Coleraine mines
called upon Superintendent Ayers
and presented a set of grievances
for the company's consideration
The grievances are:
We the undersigned committee
of Coleraine. do hereby ask for
two weeks pay and 10 per cent in
erease on the dollar; 15 per cent
off the dollar on a keg of powder
Ij thafc aR meQ get paid for oyer
time work."
buperintendent Ayres received
the men pleasantly and told them
they would receive an answer in
three days.

Philadelphia and Reading mine
workers in the upper part of the
region. The Heading company
intends to thoroughly police their
collieries in order that the strikers
will not be able to interfere with

Qeneral Situation in Strike Region
President Mitchell of the United
Mine
Workers' Union estimates
unofficially that there are 120000
men idle in the anthracite coa
region of Pennslyvania. This
leaves at work in the mines 15000
men and boys. Labor leaders
claim that the majority if not al:
of these will be out by the end of
the week.
Marching was the order of the
day yesterday and large bodies of
strikers visited numerous collieries
persuading the men to quit work
Moral suasion was generally sue
cessful though some men were at
tacked on their way to work in
mine near Hazelton. No one was
seriously mgured.

A New draft In Kansas.
Topeka Kan. Sept. 20. Men
pretending to be census enumera
tors are working western Kansas
farmers on a new scheme. The
fake enumerator visits a farmer
and gets his signature to a piece
of paper which later turns up at
some bank at the business end of
a promissory note. Government
officials here have received the fol
lowing dipping from a western
paper regarding the scheme and
may recommend the employment
of government detectives to inves
tigate the affair.:
"We have often mentioned the
fact to you that it was not good
business policy to sien papers for
strangers no matter how harmless
the paper may appear. Just at
present some slick swindlers are
going through the country with a
set of blanks like those used by
the census enumerators. Their
claim is that they want additional
information on certain matters
After it has been secured the far
mer is asked to sign a statement
Later the signature turns up in
some bank on the business end o
a promissory note."
