If the democrats, the poplist and
the silver republicans had not made
that agreement to act together in the
Congressional campaign, Representa-
tive Plowman, of Ala, would not
have been^ousted out of his 3eat in
the House, by tbe votes of the Re-
publican majority. The republicans
vored to give the seat to Aldrich
who ran as a populist ca-ndidate and
was supported by the republicans,
not because they thought he was en-
titled to it, because chey thought the
case could be ustd to divide the dem-
oerats and populisls in seme Con-
gressional district in which republi-
cans cannot possibly win if the dem-
ocratic and populists votes are cast
for a single candidate.
The Senate has passed
the Free Homes bill, at
the earnest solicitation of delegate
Callahan, this bill passed the Senate
without a single dissenting vote: it
is now before the House of Repro
sentatives which is largely Republi
can. The Democratic members will
vote solidly for the measure, now let
the Republicans get a move upon
themselvec.
Mr. MeKinley has not forgotten to
take good care of his personal friends
Another one of therm, Mr. Wm. J.
Calhoun, of 111., who it will be re-
membered was sent to Cuba as the
personal and confidential representa-
tive of Mr. MaKialley, last spring,
has been giveu a fat berth. Mr.
Calhoun is to get the position on the
Inter State Commerce Commission
vacated by the the retirement of
Wn.R. Morrison, the old demo-
cratic war-horse of Illinois, A Penn-
sylvania man was slated for this po-
sition, but so many vigorous protests
were received from labor organiza-
tions that Mr. McKinley was afraid
to appoint him;
In order that he might meet them
all and at the same time show his
appreciation of their loyalty to him
dur.ug the recent deadlock, Senator
Gorman entertained all of the demo
cratic members, of tbe Maryland
legislature except two who were
kept away by sickness, at a dinner
in Washington last week. Not a
man who attended; that dinner re-
gards Senator Gorman as out of
politbs.

will attend the Democratic Banquet
to be given that day, and will also

Democratic leaders of Kansas,
B iirtbis inmind; William McKin
ley, President of the United States
is not breaking his neck to procure
for us free homes, nor inter national
bimetallism, neither has he declarer
that the Onban insurgents are and of
right ought to be free, yet these
threa important measures are incor-
porated in the St. Louis platform.
