CONTROL MEASURES FOR FALL ARMY WORM

■
DESTROYING WORMS BY DRAGGING WITH LOG.
(Prepared by the ITnite«l States Depart-
ment of Agriculture >
reported to be
Fall army worms ar
present in great numbers In Oklahoma
and Kansas. The worm Is a hairless,
striped caterpillar, about 1V4 Inches
In length, which attacks a variety of
cultivated crops. It Is especially in-
jurious to grass, alfalfa, corn, sorghum,
katlr and millet. It Is suggested by
the United States department of ag-
riculture that when the worms are
found attacking crops the following
control measures be taken;
1. Provide yourself with ti spraying
apparatus and keep on hand several
pounds of some standard insecticide,
such as arsenate of lead, arsenate of
zinc, or purls green.
«. Watch carefully the grass grow
Ing among the cultivated field crops in
tlie bottom lands or in the low places
f the Melds, and upon the first ludlca-
| tion of the presence « f these caterpil-
lars apply poison spray as recommend*
ed below .
i 3. In case of a general Invasion, af-
ter the caterpillars have gone down
into the ground in order to change to
the next stage, which Is the pupa,
many of them can be killed by culti*
vatlm: the ground wherever this is
possible.
A. When the caterpillars are on the
, march or are starting in on one cor-
ner of a field of grain, they can be
headed off by plowing a deep furrow
directly in front of them. The larvae
falling into this furrow can very read-
ily be killed by dragging a log through
it. Where the whole field is infested
plow a furrow around it so as to keep
them out of the surrounding fields, field
Furrows should be kept five from rub-
bish. so that the larvae will have no
means or crossing to the farther side.

has no value may be sprayed with a
mixture of parls green and water, two
