nation to enter the war
Already the troops of King Ferdi-
nand are seeking entry into the
plains of Transylvania through the
eastern Carpathians toward Kron-
stadt the chief city in Transylvania
and in the direction of Hermannstadt
evidently in an endeavor to press
northward through Transylvania to-
ward tne Bukowina and Galician bor-
ders and to attack in the rear Austro-
Germans trying to hold back the Rus-
sians from entering the plains of
Hungary
Nothing has come through to indi-
cate what preparation has been made
by the Bulgarians to offset a probable
attack by the Roumanians along the
Danube front or a possible attempt
by the Russians at invasion by means
of the Danube and through Dobruja
or by the Black Sea It is estimated
that Roumania will be able to throw
nearly a million men into the field
Advancing On Two Cities
Kronstadt and Hermannstadt to-
ward which the official communica-
tion of Austria indicates ihe Rouman-
ians are making their first efforts at
an advance are near the southern
border of Hungary the first about
six miles from the Roumanian fron-
tier and the last about fifteen miles
from the frontier Kronstadt is sev-
enty miles southeast of Hermann

alters the whole balance of power in
the eastern and southern theaters

Effect on Greece
Politically the London papers be-

have its most immdiaq effect In
Greece strengthening the hands of

WHY THEY FOUND A VERDICT
Bailiff's Message Evidently Impressed
the Jury Though It Somewhat
Disconcerted Judge Blair
A story told by Judge Alonzo Hluir
of Shelbyvllle explains how a court
bailiff mused an early verdict In ft
complicated case because the bailiff
misunderstood the Judge’s conversa-
tion The Jury In a dnmtige suit hud
long been out according to Judge
I Btnir when It requested the bailiff
to nk the Judge whether the latter
had to stay up at night as long as the
Jurors did to receive the verdict
"I told the bailiff" said Judge Illnlr
"that though I could retire whenever
I pleased I had no intention of retir-
ing early but as I was tired of waiting
would then go to supper I had scarce-
ly put on my coat and hat and got
outside the courthouse when the bailiff
raised a window and shouted to me
H) Judge come back — they've got
' ane!’ Mystified I returned and sure
enough the Jury had agreed upon a
i verdict which I received and then dis-
missed the Jurors But I was suspici-
ous and as I was again about to
leave 1 7 said to the bailiff ‘John
what did you say to those jurors when
you went back the last time?'
1 " 'Why Judge I Just told them’ said
the truthful John "that no you didn't
have to stay up as long as they did
but you was gettin' tired of nil this
monkey business'” — lndlunajKilis
